Basically you set the WG boost to about 0.2 bar less than peak boost. so if HF chipset runs 1.4 bar then setting the WG boost to 1 bar even wouldnt be a problem. As i have found in the past, it will reduce lag and make the car feel faster. I used 2 springs at one point!!

Tom - are you stirring the pot or what... I have run more than a handful of S2s with the WGFV disconnected and seen 0.4bar max boost every time except on one car (can't remember who) with a much stiffer spring that was running 0.8bar mechanical boost.

FFS, whats the factory book say then? I only quoted what my car ran stock. And Ross's car did the same as i ran it with WGFV unplugged when running it in.

I took the info from your website as a reference!!!! Make your mind up. Which is true? your website or this info in this thread?

Well I am certainly not gonna get caught in the middle of a 'discussion' between you 2 experts and I always thought the ABY made 0.5bar with the WGFV disconnected anyway, but that link to S2Central says...

'To my knowledge, the 3B engines were equipped with a spring that allows the wastegate to open at 1.6bar of absolute manifold pressure (~0.6bar boost) whereas the ABY & ADU engines were fitted with a 1.8bar WG spring. This means that without the electrical control of the wastegate (via the wastegate frequency valve) the 3B would be capped at 0.6bar boost and the ABY at 0.8bar.'

I am confused, but being entertained

              Cheers n

I agree you *can* set it up that way - if you wish to reduce the safety margin between ECU boost control turned on or not.

I have always run with stock WG spring with safety in mind and just ensure there is suitably high duty cycle on the WGFV to hit the target boost profile... With a much stiffer spring there would be less lag, but the safety margin would be reduced and I'd have to tweak the WG mapping so it didn't go out of adaptation range - TBH - I would like to do it on my own car to characterise the difference.

There is some scope for slightly stiffer springs on my setup but I think it would complain with a beefy spring.

LOL @ Tom - I wouldn't take ~5yr old material on my web site as gospel - I'll bet that was written long before I got real world data...

@ Everyone with genuinely unmolested S2/RS2 Wastegates - do us a favour and unplug the WGFV connector then take a lil drive... FLoor it in any gear you like and report back what max boost you see.

OK, I know I am gonna get in trouble here, but the para before on your site says: -

'To complement the ECU upgrade, a stiffer return spring in the wastegate is recommended. The reasons for this will be fully explained in the technical chapters in the very near future. In short, a stiffer wastegate spring provides a simple way of increasing the mechanical contribution to boost levels that are permitted in the engine. It also marginally reduces turbo lag.'

Is that the same as your post above?

                    Cheers n

I wasnt taking it as gospel. Its a very informative website and was mearly quoting what was written there. Also what you had written was what my real life findings were. Thats why we need to read the bentley book and see if its for real.
