OK been for a drive around the village and I have learnt the following (in a homefried ABY): -

    1. Max mechanical boost with a stock spring and factory position nut = 0.4 bar (in gears 1 - 4)

    2. Gears 5 & 6 are not possible in my village as the speed bumps tend to launch you skywards

    3. The WGFV is not easy to disconnect in the dark

    4. Don't reconnect the WGFV in the dark in a hot engine with a very hot turbo

    5. My wife gets mad when I go from the study to the car and drive off without telling her what/when/why/where/how

    Cheers n

      @ James.
Just do me a favour, go out there, pull the MAF connector off spray it with switch cleaner if you have some and wiggle it on and off a few times and take it for a drive. Let us know if its still overboosting.

Si, you beat me to it. Unlike Paul I don't have the oats option so I too have been out around with the wastegate valve disconnected................I'm waiting until tomorrow morning to reconnect it

Like Si I have an unmodified ABY other than Homefries fitted. Max boost I saw was 6 PSI, which equals 0.4 bar - so there it is.

Paul, you should be ready to rejoin the debate..........

            Hi guys....WOW

I have only been away a couple of hours....!
Very interesting though, I am having a day on the car on Monday, so will be reporting my findings.
Just a quickie though....My car boosts at 0.6 bar with the wgfv disconnected. It only boosts at 0.4 with the screw fully out (standard spring)

Will try spraying the maf connector over the weekend...

Thanks for all the help guys, much appreciated.

ps @johne & HPmuirt....I owe you both some fuel!

Fuel no problem, been enjoying the debate and happy to have an excuse to "floor it"

Only problem is that sort of driving ruins my reputation for driving like a nun as I'm the only one on here to achieve 30 mpg with Homefries and 95 unleaded

                Hi John...

You are on for a challenge of fuel economy when I get my bloody car working properly.
Am looking forward to getting to the bottom of it so have got all day in the workshop on Monday.
Anything else worth checking. Am going to go to town on the leak test and try and rule that out if it holds pressure.
Would a leak cause a rough idle?

                Cheers

Not an expert on this area but for me rough idle has been cured by cleaning the idle stabilisation valve with carb cleaner

Any leak is a problem because the engine won't be getting the oxygen the MAF has told the ECU it is so the fuelling will be wrong

Have you cleaned the wire mesh in the flame trap ,mine was clogged with carbon
which doesnt help with cranckcase breathing.
I also cleaned the air flow censor on the inlet mani which all helps smooth running.

Thanks for putting it in simple terms John...So it really doesnt need much of a leak to affect things then...
As far as the idle goes, I bought a new ISV today (god, this is getting expensive!)
and it made no difference at all...car still stalls at roundabouts or whenever you coast to a stop with your foot on the clutch.

                      James
ps now off to bed, thanks for all the info though guys, will resume tomorrow

                            Hi Andy...

Yep, cats were changed when I bought the car....they were totally blocked and it was not boosting at all....when put on the dyno it was producing 102bhp...!

As i have said, I am spending ALL day and night in the workshop tommorrow, so any ideas as to what to check would be most appreciated.... I have a few things written down.

                            Check plugs and @ 30lb/ft
                            Leak test EVERYTHING
                            Check and clean MAF connection
Check flame trap mesh and clean.
                            Clean (new) ISV with wd40

                            Anything else i could check/try...?

                            Cheers

                            James

ps, did the output test from SJM website today and all components seem to be working fine. (should do as the wgfv and isv are brand new)
