How long to remove and fit an S2 engine

For those that have done it before, how long does it realistically take to remove and refit an engine into an S2?

    Jamo,

I've done it twice and I'd say 10 hours minimum but a lot depends on your facilities, is the car on a hoist or ramps etc. and then there's just no knowing how long some of Audi's design features such as one nicely concealed turbo flange bolt with a specially sized 16mm nut on a m10 stud (which you'd expect to have a 17mm nut as the other 2 are) just so they can squeeze it in will take to undo.

Like lots of things in life, it depends how good your tools are.............

I think it depends how much of that plastic crap there is under the bonnet. As I've removed mine I can have just about all of the ancillaries out in an hour or two. If you have to work around all the plastic then indeed 10 hours is a conservative estimate.

Just to clarify, I meant out and back in in 10 hours.

When the engine has been removed are you talking head off, block removed or all in one go?

              time...

Three 8 hour days+ and using just drive on ramps. Also mine is a series 2 so no front panel that can be removed that meant engine went in from above almost vertical.

as someone who had never removed one before...ever - took me at least a day to remove (being careful, labeling and photos as i went and at least as much to get back in and all the bits back on.....with a helping hand from Pete too.

I think you could do it much quicker but I wanted everything to be spot on so took as much time as I felt comfortable with.

If you haven't got the right tools, then it will be a really frustrating task and that is no understatement Be prepared for siezed stuff and usual bits you can't get a socket or spanner on etc.

I think Johne's quote is only valid if you've done it before and have immediate access to a mighty toolkit along with good hoists and such... and there are no showstopping issues with seized bolts etc - those can really set you back.

I'd say most of us would do well to get the engine out in ~8hrs

Then any sort of time invested in cleanup or maintenance of the engine bay --> inspecting the loom, aircon pipes, steering, brake pipes

And realistically its probably another 8hrs getting it back in working alone... This from hazy memories of taking a KV engine in / out of the old Typ85 - similar task on the big scheme of things.

Yup, i'd hazard a guess at a day to remove and a day to put one back in providing you know exactly what goes where and work non stop.

One thing that catches people out is the gearbox bolts as there's a couple that WILL be covered in grease and I doubt you'd be able to get to unless you know they are there.

Downpipe /turbo nuts are a pita as me and david found out.

@david, i'll give you a shout when mines removed/put back in

remember to factor in at least 20 minutes to try electrocuting yourself on the starter when you plg one lead into the wrong terminal then try messing with it

Oh I hate that - did it once - disconnecting both sides of battery is the way forward when tampering with the old starter.
