Hum... If you want to polish all things that are inaccessible after engine is back in, you won't get it done in 1 weekend. On the other hand, if it's just a straightforward swap job, should be done in 1 weekend. 1 day to get old engine out and 1 day to install new engine. That estimate ofcourse is based on assumption that new engine is "complete" so that it only needs wiring and hoses to connect.

Paul, It took a lot longer the first time I had the engine out, and I did have Aelred with me to show me the ropes. I've not had much contact with the S2 recently, as it's been in the garage since I moved house last year. It's now my autumn/winter project to get her back on the road, first job is engine out for a new clutch and another gearbox!

Steve - that is good going... and hey - nice to see you on here again - been a while.

This could be the start of a great competition at the next garage meet (if we ever have another one) - to see who can do it the quickest - Top Gear style in teams with some objective at the end - like driving to a distant beer shop and back to prove the car is still working after the engine refit.

Jamo, it's not too bad a job, just a bit daunting the first time. Mark everything up and take a few pics to remind you when it's going back together. I removed the engine, replaced the clutch and got it back together in just over a day that last time I did it. That was outside and by myself, so if you have the right tools and some help you'll be laughing. Mind, you'll still end up with some nasty scratches and bruises from those hard to get to bolts.

BTDT. Just what you need when your hands are full with the engine. Another good reason to have a block of wood at the ready to rest the engine on, just after you've separated it from the gearbox.

It's the other jobs that take the time, and where do you stop?
And what do you replace those manky bits you threw away, before you found out they are NLA?

My engine is now ready to come out again. Hopefully for the last time.
