Taking the engine out and stripping it can be done in an afternoon. Putting the engine back in takes ~2 years IME.

A year? no no we're on GMT no QMT!

so do we have a consensus on how long it takes? I've heard some sources suggesting it takes over a year!

good l;uck jamo
use a methodical approach and you will have no issues.
as a first timer with a fair bit on knowledge id say 15 hours if its not been out before. always best to check things and check again. once you have do the hokey-cokey a few times then less.
i never removed the full engine in my build instead taking it apart in the car. after many an experience i went from std to wagner in around 10-12hours work. including removing the bonnet plastics and getting making the cable extension and putting the ding in the underside of the bonnet so you can shut it and rewelding the crossmember so it would fit with all the loveley promounts.Leave a comment:

Don't forget to disconnect the earth wire that attaches to the bellhousing if you're not seperating the GB and block. Always catches me out.... every time....Leave a comment:

I've got a spare pair of hands if you could use them when the time comes Jamo - be good to break someone elses car instead of my own for a change

220bhp is right....don't think....ah yeah will remember where that goes or what orientation, you won't
REALLY wish i had labelled the engine/gearbox bolts up, took bloody ages to get them right, thought I had gone mad

That's what the week in the middle is for. Polishing of parts you won't see again.@Phatty - you'll be mostly polishing grommets to death and toothbrushing your inner track rod ends while the engine is out !
@Jamo - I'll look up the ABY factory info - it does refer to a couple of funky tools along the way - the 15mm banana spanner for EM/WG bolts comes to mind in the main.

I've borrowed the label make from work so will be labelling wires, will have a pic, got my assembly laptop with family album and bentley pdf's etc
I might delay this for a while depending on how much I can get done this week.Leave a comment:

I have done it twice now and I can tell you that to take it out is no problem, just need a helping pair of hands a good hoist and trolley jack along with a good tool kit, it takes about a day.
Now putting it back in is a different matter, if you don't label everything when you take it of you will take forever trying to remember what go's where, offering up different bolts etc, etc. So make sure you wright everything down and label it all in sequence together with plenty of photos to remind you. do not think you will remember everything because you wont. If you project manage the extraction well you should have no problem putting it back in a day and a bit.
Lastly take it out and put it back in with head turbo and IM still attached, and dont forget the earth wires
