Its been off a coupe of times already. Is it worth spraying some contact cleaner in there perhaps?

Yes. If only to eliminate it from the list of usual suspects. See recent thread on MAF connection issues and solutions (sand paper, Stabilant 22, etc).

I read Newsh's thread earlier and his symptoms are sounding very very similar. I've tried a few things MAF related this morning but still to no avail.

I'm awaiting my diagnostic stuff to come through so I can see if the ECU is playing ball.

Right! Tried Vagcom-ing the ECU earlier but to no avail, wouldn't even communicate with the car, let alone read any codes, after trying that, I attempted to start the engine but the battery was near on dead so I put it down to that.

I stuck the battery charger on and had a fiddle around while I was waiting, and did the following:

Adjusted the pins on the MAF sensor and gave them a good going over with some wet&dry. (See Newsh's MAF connector thread)
Gently adjusted the pins on the ECU, as I'd struggled to get the connector in and may have slightly bent some.
Turned the DV back round to the way I originally had it plumbed in.

I got the engine started and let it warm up, and gave the engine a rev, and for the first time in weeks, that trademark wastegate chatter sounded again, rather than the limp "ptsshh" noise it has been doing.

Its blocked in on the driveway at the minute but will going out later to try it.

Thought it was too much to hope for.....

Huge cloud of black smoke out the back at anything over 0.3 bar of boost. Limped back to the driveway and it cut out while sitting idling.

Currently running no air box at the minute cos its a sod to get in and out all the time. Surely this wouldn't stall it would it?

Thats the only thing I haven't had the chance to try, I've used 600 grade sandpaper to gently clean the terminals but still to no avail.

Just to add to it, while on the phone to S-Express, I put my thumb straight through the front wing. Its absolutely rotten

Is the boost line connected to the ECU properly and not leaking?

I cant hear it leaking. Would the small bore vacuum hose be enough to give such a drastic boost loss? Also can I run without an airbox at all? I know it isn't ideal, I've got about 20 miles to do tomorrow. I tried to get an old K&N cone on there before but its too small.

Tried some contact cleaner on the MAF connector, gone out again and still no difference.

I'm at my wits end. Please let VAGcom find something.

It was just a thought as mine ran horribly smokey when the ecu line was leaking cos the little clamp wouldn't go tight enough. its not that its a massive boost loss but that the car is boosting and the ecu isn't reading it.

If you have a bad knock sensor the engine will run like crap as the ecu thinks its knocking and reduces boost, retards the ignition and dumps in fuel.

Re no air filter, you have to wonder if the engine might suck a solid object in.. Anything getting sucked in has to go through the turbo.. If you have the screens on your MAF you're probably safe for a few miles as long as its not too dusty. I've rn motorbikes on open bell mouths for years.

John, I called round to S-Express' gaff earlier (huge thanks dude) and VAGcom says everything is as normal and no faults come up. He came up with the conclusion that the problem must be something mechanical and not electronic.

Didn't get a chance to do a pressure check tonight, I didn't finish work until just before 7:30pm and it was pretty much dark by then, but hopefully I can manage to get round there next Saturday and do it then. Unfortunately I have none of the gear required to do that.

I'm going to take the cap off the top of the wastegate and see if the diaphragm is damaged or split, as it may be losing boost through there, or indeed if the wastegate has seized with it sitting for a few weeks.

It certainly seems to be getting fuel, but far from enough air to go with it.

ISV needs a good clean out too, nearly cut out on me again this evening coming home.
