    Badly...

The two bucket tappets, which look outwardly alike, may only in the motor vehicle types assigned for it blocked become! They are exchangeable in no case!

Resembles geometrical dimension however not exchangeably, because:
    • different dropping times of the hydraulic element (HTE)
    • Dosage of the quantity of oil
    • other specifications of the oil
    • other surface finish of the Cup ground (e.g. case-hardened, nitrated, etc. phosphatizes)
    • Kind of the tappet (labyrinth, discharge-secured or bucket tappets with interior detour)
    • different spring action of the check valve
    • different Ventilhübe of the hydraulic Element (HTE) (way in mm) Possible consequences during neglect:
    • increased mass forces
    • Noises in the valve impulse
    • higher friction and material wear
    • Material overloading
    • higher pollutant output and fuel consumption
    • Damage to the engine!

As a summary the small print says:
      - use only in cars where these were originally planned for.
      - that is the factory responsibility statement

I have heared positive comments of those lightweight hyd.-lifters.
However, I do not carry any responsibility if the parts are not ok for a longer time period. It is up to the reader to decide or test if ok or not and with which oil they work or does not work. I tried to collect as much information as possible for the forum members to analyze together.

      EDIT:
but as an additional founding a web parts catalog with prices in eur:
      - no taxes inside Europian Union

Umm OK, well those translations have not really helped, so what do the experts think?

Tom, Doug, Mark, Aelred - would any of you guys try these in your own engine?

        Cheers n

I think the main cause of the warnings is that you are not supposed to run the heavier lifters in cars that were specced with the light ones. For obvious reasons.
It is also possible that the oil passages in the lightweight lifters are smaller, due to thinner oil spec'ed for newer cars.

I have been running these in my Golf for a number of years with no problems at all.

I'd agree with Espen actually - its to stop folk running the heavier (old) lifters on engines designed for the new ones... and/or that the recent new fangled longlife oil formulations somehow disagree with the old lifters.

Espen also raises a good question about oilway dimensions, but by sounds of his experience there is no problem in a Golf head (I assume 16V judging by 1986 claim) and so that head is one cylinder short of ours and I'm pretty confident.

I have a set of old 7A lifters lying here... Should really buy a set of the lightweight ones and see what (if any) differences can be visually detected. Thats unlike for a few months however.

The Golf head is 8v. However, the same lifters were spec'ed for the 8v and 16v (and 20v Audi) heads, so they are similar in that regard.

So just for us lesser mortals -

                who can't keep up.

What's the part number of the lightweight hydraulic lifters part that should be fitted when rebuilding an ABY head?

                Is it " 050109309J ".

Also on a slightly parallel track, what's the part number of a 3B flywheel for use in an ABY?

                Thanks !

Has anyone found a good price for these lightweight lifters? I was planning on buying the standard ones from Custom autocraft for EUR 120 http://sites.internet.lu/folders/cus..._S6_S6PLUS.htm

                    .

Most of the sites i found were states based...maybe Joe @ Axis can help?

Would have thought CAC could source them if asked?

Keen to find a reasonable priced source too.

I asked Paul at CAC. He's looking into it but hasn't got them at the moment. He also told me to watch out for different manufacturers as some of the aftermarket lifters actually weigh more than standard, apparently he's seen them weighing as much as 75g and 83g!! His weigh 65g as per OEM.
