Can someone confirm that the bearings in a factory ABY turbo are plain?
I ask because I’ve just read that plain turbo bearings froth the oil fed through them so it’s important to have a large, relatively straight path for the oil return to the sump to prevent the frothed oil from backing up in the turbo bearing housing.
That would explain the relatively large diameter hose returning oil from the turbo to the sump. When I fitted air-conditioning to my car, I found that there were two versions of the turbo oil return hose as the non A/C one fouls the back of the compressor. Rather than spend £100 on the A/C version from the stealer, I modified my non A/C turbo oil return hose to fit behind the compressor using 10mm copper tube but that means it is more restricted than it was, so should I be worried and fit the proper hose?
