    Bailey DV/Recirc valve rebuild.

I wasn't really getting that nice "WOOSH" sound when coming off throttle, but, nor was I getting a turbo stall type noise. What I was getting was a severe judder when coming off throttle quickly and the car was acting like it had a boost leak, you know, running rich, low boost, jerky running etc.

So I thought I'd have a little investigation and see what sort of condition the Bailey recirc valve is in.

Off it comes, and these were my observations:

    1. No lubricant to speak of. What was left was like a very sticky goo.

    2. Weak spring. My Bailey was 2nd hand so this is only to be expected.

    3. No sort of seal where the top plate meets the main body of the valve.

    4. Poor seal on the vac hose nozzle.

Remedial action I have taken is:

    1. Cleanes all parts with brake cleaner and re-lubricated all parts inc. the seal on the piston.

    2. Added a nylon washer of about 1.5mm thickness into the piston to take up any slack in the spring.

    3. Used some instant gasket on the top plate.

    4. Used some plumbers tape (PTFE) on the vac hose nozzle.

After test driving the car I have noticed:

    1. The "WOOSH" sound is back.

    2. The turbo boosts a little quicker and in a more linear manner.

    3. No shudder when coming off throttle.

    4. Drives better generally.

So, I'd recommend to anyone to give your recirc/DV a little TLC. It makes a nice bit of difference.

The only downside I have discovered is that I found a whole load of play in my turbo shaft when messing with the DV.

Play in the shaft is not neccessarily a problem, its supposed to have some as its 2 bearings one inside the other. What its not supposed to have is too much end float.

Baileys dump valve is naff to be honest, The design means it constantly needs to be lubricated or the piston will stick.

Having used one on the S2, I replace it with a forge which was a huge improvement.

This has since been replaced with a Dahlback unit.

The R1 unit or hyper valve is a good unit but these cost a fair bit of money

An R1 unit would be my ideal replacement. I'll stick with the Bailey for a short while as it's now much improved with the extra spring pressure (new found boost ).
