    Apikol replacement coils/kit for ABY

I have the kit as detailed above and in the link below fitted to my 93' ABY Avant

Discover Apikol's top-tier performance parts and expert installs for Audi, VW, Porsche, and BMW. Upgrade with OEM parts and enjoy a 12-month warranty!

Im haveing some issues with the car when on boost, it seems to spool up ok but sometimes (3 outa 4 times) it doesnt boost smoothly, it like hesitates several times, with some like violant jerking...

its been suggested in a previous post that the coils are usually the culprite, my question is; the kit fitted to my car (as above) doesnt use the POS it has a seperate loom and what they discribe a custom modified (06B 905 115R) A4 coil packs.

if ive got a problem with one, how do i identify which it is, and once i can find it what do i replace it with if the coil has been "custom modified"

alternatively, what else could be causing this intermittant problem (coil kit is only about 18 months old) I had a boost test done recently at QST with no problems and it doesnt feel any slower when its not doing it, which leads me to beleive its eletrical?

Ive been to Cuba for the past to weeks and am dying to get back in the S2, so help would be greatly appreciated...

    cheers,
    Keith

    have you scanned with vag.com?

The coils are not modified and each coil has (ind POS)..Have you covered the coils?...I would pop the plugs out and see if there is any difference with colour and this should indicate any failing coils when at high boost ...If it is running crap to start with you can pop off an injector plug one at a time and see if that makes a difference to the engine note ..this will lead to which cylinder is not sparking properly

Coils are covered with the Apikol vented stainless steel plate thats supplied extra with the kit, so they dont overheat.

The website text says the coils are modified? is this not the case? if so surely i can just replace the individual coils with genuine VAG ones as per the part no. supplied on the website?

ill whip the plugs out tomorrow and have a look, problem is it runs sweet as a nut on idle and off boost, just sometime at WOT its all hessitant and jumpy..

Personally go back to the OEM coills over them. They are 1.8t coils and don't stand up to heat very well even more so in the S2 engine bay.

they were on the car when i bought it, i do have the origionals but the guy i bought the car from said they were changed because of an intermitant missfire.

how do i repair/replace what needs to be replaced on the origional setup? can you buy the 5 coils individually?

1.8t Coils can be bought individually no problem, the only issue is there is about a million and one revisions of the coils.

See if you can find a part number on them.

I have run the 1.8 coil conversion for nearly 2 yrs and no problems at all on the Avant ..After reading it again..I would check what plugs it has first and take it from there as it might be something as simple as duff plugs

(06B 905 115R) this is the part no. of the coils provided with the kit..

last time my mechanic friend tried to get the car on VAGCOM it wouldnt connect, he sometimes has problems with the older 2 pin style plugged cars, but we were able to get it to connect to a Snap-on Diagnostic machine, small hand held jobbie, will this be able to identify a dodgy coil, and also if it can will it tell which one?

The above description could also be overboost protection which indicates a boost leak or a duff MTFS switch / Knock Sensors.

There's a few options to check, if it's only happening on boost and you have no POS i'm not so sure it's the coils. Just some 0.02 too think about.

Multifunction temperature switch. You might want to check out this device map (it's for an AAN but the ABY is basically the same except for the intake manifold arrangement):

The "custom modified" nature of the 115R 1.8T coils that Apikol supplies with their plug and play kit refers to the fact that the coils have to be modified slightly to have a bit of the hard plastic removed and some of the ribs on the rubber sealing ring trimmed away. Nothing inside the coil pack is modified. You can buy a normal VAG 115R coil and use it to replace the one that is having the problem (trim it like the one you remove).
