    Cleaning RC and IM

I'm about the have my RC, coil pack cover and IM blasted back to a nice clean factory finish - and then fit the Samcos .

Anyone got any suggestions for keeping the finish looking good? I want it to be just the aluminium and avoid painting it with colours (even silver) if i can.

Can I get clear, high temp, non yellowing lacquer?
Can I get clear powder coating that will withstand engine temps?
Come to think of it what sort of temps would coatings on the IM and RC need to withstand?

    Question, questions.............

    Cheers

Get a look at Sals if you are both aiming for Billing. He powder coated is and it looks well smart.

Hi Leigh, the rocker cover needs blasting with glass beads ate less than 90 PSI. The items could then be anodised with a clear finish ( or red or blue if you wanted!) the anodising process cannot be done if there is anything steel or ferrous in the tank. i.e. all studs would have to be removed. This is a long lasting finish and would be ok even at reasonably high temperaturefor a long time.

I need to do the same for mine and the 7A has a huge inlet manifold!.

      Good luck.

And a copy of this months 'BLING BLING' magazine goes to David for this radical suggestion. Wouldn't the anodised finish on the not perfectly smooth surface of RC or IM still attract grime over time ? Just wondering how hard that would be to keep clean and errrr bling.

WOnder who in the group will be first to get a purple anodised finish on their cam cover then ?

I've had a lot of anodised mountain bike components over the years and it is a very hard wearing coating. Usually only needs a quick wash down and the dirt just drops off. I think if you anodise a surface it will become smooth - like painting a slightly rough surface AFAIK

I'll look into this and let people know what happens.

Now you come to mention it, a red cam cover would go well with the paintwork.... and my eyes!

            Useless information time:
anodising is basically dangling the metal item in a tank which is filled with sulphuric acid and passing an electric current through the tank. I think stainless steel plates are used. By varying the current the colour can be varied to produce red, blue Purple etc.

It will show inperfections in the metal though underneath it since it is a very thing coating that is put onto the metal, But if you want to keep the sandblasted finish that will be fine

Well thats a coincidence!!! I am about to tackle this as my first hands on job myself Doug posted a link for removing the RC and Mr N has posted the info on fitting the Samcos What i am now not sure about is the IM... Is it also straight forward to remove? Any BTDT's? Is there any torque settings etc?

Nice one... I have to do mine this weekend and next week as my RC gasket is leaking.I just thought it would be easier to do all at once, but i guess theres no harm in wiating for the IM to be done. DR H, Have you decided what finish you will have.I am going for the powder coating......

Not sure on the finish yet. Are you having silver power coating or can you get clear?

Yeah I'm thinking it may be the best way to go. I'm going to use the place that did my wheels as they did a really good job and are pretty cheap. I'll see if they do clear powder coat. Just a case of making sure they don't blast or coat any of the gasket faces.

I'd recommend you fit new IM and throttle body gaskets whilst your at it.

Doing the RC gasket is easy - took me about 35 mins to do mine. I have no garage and a thunderstorm was brewing at the time

High temperature clear lacquers are available, these would be suitable for the rocker cover and the inlet manifold. The trick is not to 'damage' the metal surface as it shows through the clear coat.

The 7a engine has a big heat shield round the exhaust manifold and this needs to be VHT exhaust paint really.

I think I will do as Sal with the powder coating - looked very good & wipe clean.
He said it only cost him £20 !!
Will have to find out where he had it done & see if they will do a GB for a batch of IMs & RCs
