I was wondering if anyone could explain the difference in noise that turbo chatter and a 'chirpy' dump valve would make?

My car makes a noise reminiscent of turbo chatter but i always figured it was just the dump valve but would rather not destroy my turbo.

      Thanks.

Could the pressure relief be used in "stock" setup then (ie using the N75 and stock WG spring) to avoid WG creep?

Buy a stiffer 1.1 spring for the wastegate, much better option

I agree, this urban myth about impellor stall wrecking turbos is horseshlt. recirc / blow off valves are used to try and keep the turbo spinning to reduce lag. Most older jap turbo cars don't run them from the factory and they don't have exploding turbos.

i love the sound, IMHO best with a adjustable BOV so you get some chatter a low boost, but then actuate for recirc at higher boost to stop getting lots of lag

It's not an urban myth it's simple dynamics of two forces trying to act in opposite directions, the turbo centre section and blades will take some strain and it is a known cause of turbo failure.

More common on high boost cars.

As for motorsport cars lets face it their equipment is built a) with higher tolerances b) built to failure - if it fails it's replaced.

It's amazing how virtually every post modern turbo car produced has a BOV to relieve the air pressure so all the car manufacturers must be wrong..............................

i dont think anyone said manufacturers are wrong, but lag in this day and age is not acceptable and neither is the chav sound that comes with it, I would bet that they are the majority reasons to run most current turbo'd cars with a tbv.

Newsh's Tresser UR was quite happy singing round the track at ADI last year without one fitted (from the factory) - and sounded bloody brilliant chirping away

Just disconnect the DV vacuum feed, it'll give you turbo chatter and DV as a backup. Agree with J to the amo that it's a bad idea unless you've got a few spare turbos kicking about

Detatch as in remove the line and block it to prevent a small boost leak.

The spring in the DV might not be strong wnough to hold boost tho as normally it does very little work as the top and bottom of the piston are at the same(ish) pressure. With a suitably large spring it'd work.

How do you know? If a turbo fails it will let go in big fashion masking all other symptoms.

End of the day BOV is a cheap *** way of protecting your £1200 turbo!
