@Jamo - thats a good idea, and I know where you are coming from but at idle the ECU is in closed loop mode with lamdba feedback on mixture so it modulates round stohic mixture as quickly as a healthy probe will allow.

The only way to spoof the lambda probe is with a good WB-O2 probe/module... Like TechEdge, LC-1, Zeitronix - you can safely setup for a lean setup so that the ECU modulates happily and error free around a less rich mixture.

@Bo - the sport/economy mode is just one suggestion... Could be two 'sport' modes - one being more aggressive than the other and requires 99RON fuel and water injection to run properly. Think of it has having a factory or generic chipset in one bank and something customised in the other... Or one with 'his/her' modes for those that have (in)sufficient trust of their spousal driving capabilities on the beloved car.

Selecting between two banks will require one wire, extended from ECU internals, to be left open circuit or pulled to ground. Can't do much easier than that for a 1-bit binary bank selector !

When i drove mine with the N75 disconnected i was quite impressed that even the mechanical boost alone allowed you to dominate most problems.

Am i right in thinking homefries is 1.3-1.4 bar? If thats that case, 0.8 bar sounds sounds a good number, unless you want a super economic mode - but them you may as well buy a diesel.

The best ive had was following Stu's lupo on the way to harrogate. First i started by dropping it into the higher gears early, then accelerating slowly instead of just mashing the right foot. Then i started avoiding the brake pedal as much as possible and trying not to brake at round abouts. Finally i started dipping the clutch and dropping it into neutral, coasting downhill.... resulted in an average of about 40mpg - a figure ive only ever seen in my clio

Ah ha! There, my friend, you have made an error! A modern engine won't actually use any fuel if you are off the accelerator and the car is in gear, however if you coast the engine is using fuel to idle.

          Strange but true

(BTW my S2 average is 16mpg and I've had 60mpg our of the Bora a few times )

S2 should be able to do it as well as it does measure engine load.

I for one love this idea as it is just too painful to drive economically, so actually switching it into that mode would be great.

I have one dumb ar$ed question though and two standard questions: -

                  1. I am assuming we could switch maps on the fly so that we can hit the sport button and get full beans whenever some chimp in a ricer needs a seeing to? :mischeif:
                  2. Wassit gonna cost? (I already have the homefries map )
                  3. When can I have one? (and don't do the German manifold/IC bloke trick of saying 45 days over and over again )

                    2. Dunno yet for sure - depends if I outsource some tidy hardware mod, create my own or some other less elegant looking hack. Guess GBP50-100 ballpark.

                    3. You can be a Beta tester if you like. Lets say Easter timeline - don't want to commit much earlier than that, but you never know... I'll want to do some sanity testing of my own before I let this loose.

The on-the-fly change sounds a bit dodgy, but you'll know whether its possible Paul.

Am i right in thinking the s2 ECU "learns" the more you drive it? How would swapping the map regularly impact upon this or would it be able to store information for each map individually?

I like the idea of having my homefries for everyday use and then a "ring map" designed to work with 100ron jungle juice you get over on the continent

I just read through the whole thread to see if someone had asked about on-the-fly switching, Si beat me to it - I am liking the sounds of this idea and I will be needing something one day when my car finally looks like something other than a pile of parts.

@Sonic - that question about learning is the only unknown at this point. Well - I'll rephrase that - I do know the ECU is only aware of one chipset and its a hack to fake switchable use of two, so there is a chance that 'adaptation errors' could be raised by the ECU if there is a large step between the two modes when changed on the fly. At worst you would get fault codes, but actually they need to be sufficiently persistent to register as a fault so I dunno - again its why I don't want to have unlimited options and unknowns here.

For people like yourself wanting a generic map plus a custom/enhanced map on a switchable setup I'll need to think about pricing carefully.

I think the original idea of sport vs economy modes is generic enough that its in GBP50-100 territory, for existing homefry users... But its going to be more to cover enhanced/custom chips for individual users wanting a switchable setup. I'm very aware, especially in this climate, that their is a natural limit on what people think a tweak like this is worth.

Seeing as this thread is getting more immediate attention & interest than I had imagined, I'll cook the hack into my spare ECU when it returns from duty.

I'll make mine switchable between the normal generic homefry and a more aggressive / winter friendly one that has been creating smiles recently. I'll run that for a while with plenty of 'on the fly' changes and let you know... I have a MIL bulb wired into my cluster so I will see any fault codes immediately.

I'll need to test out an economy chipset as well then - enter the new toys for real-time mapping and AFR checks, but that's another matter entirely.
