    Not S2 but coupe.......

    Hi guys...
i know its not an S2 but recently got a 2.3 10v coupe '93 that has some slight running issues. Tried looking for other coupe forums but no joys.

1, Car sometimes just turns and turns and doesnt fire. Wait 2 secs and try again and it fires up! Then it idles lumpy but occasionaly has a hunt, about 200 rpm, nothing terrible.

2, When approaching a juntion whils engine is cold, it has stalled couple of times but mainly the revs drop to 2/300 rpm and after few secs it picks up and revs around 1k rpm (idles currently at 950rpm)

3, where is the cold start valve and idle control valve?

I've replaced plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor and no difference. I removed air intake pipe and there was alot of grime around the twin intake butterflies. Presumably oil from the crankcase breather?? As the breather pipe joins into air intake pipe just before the butterflies on the TB.

Thanks for any help in advance.

is this the sort with the flap by the airbox? if so could check that it is moving freely and clean the edge of it. Also worth checking the injectors for leaks on the seals.

I have one of these as a daily driver, that sounds like it could be a vacuum leak. I had similar problems with mine and that was caused by leaks where the oil breather pipe enters the rubber inlet boot thingy.

        Hi,

yeah i think so. There is the fuel pump situated on top of air box and inside there is a big disc. THis does move freely and did seem clean at time. Dut due to all the pipe work atached to the air box top i didnt really inspect for too long. But will have another look.

        cheers.

          Hi,

TO be honest, this bit looks like it has been repaired before. has alot of black silicone/tiger seal around the short stubb where the oil breather pipe fits it. Maybe should replace with another from scrap yard.

Or is the a way of doing a breather mod and blanking off this stub altogether. Or is the breather compulsory into the air intake?

          cheers.

I don't see why not, you would have to install a catch tank for the crank case breather to vent it's vapour to. However the cost of doing a tidy job of this would be more than decent second hand boot.

Just remembered I had problems with another semi hidden vacuum pipe under the inlet manifold as well as the inlet boot, so it would be worth having a pock round under there as well.

On sunday im going to remove inlet manifold so i can remove and clean the ISV.

Will i need any new gaskets do you know?

Never done a breather pipe mod so think i'll stick with replacing the full boot!

You don't need to remove the IM to gain access to the ISV.

Just pull off the ISV with the hose and clamp still connected, there is no clip at the other end so can can slide it on and off without too much trouble.

Right, had the air pipe off today and there was a crack where oil breather pipe joined. Had that sealed with tiger seal. Tough strong black sealent the has slight elasticity to ensure it dont crack again.

I also removed the ISV after noticing that the pipe wooth the jubilee clip on led to air intake pipe too. Once off cleaned thoroughly with carb cleaner.

Put it all back together and on idle it ran smoother. great stuff.

So drive home and pulll up on drive and listening to engine and its gone lumpy on tick over.

I'll wait till morning and see how it runs then but if its still lumpy what else should i look at cleaning/changing?

p.s. when ISV was out and looking into the larger pipe inlet/outlet the valve didnt fully close. is this normal? I did take a pic but not sure on how to post!

                        Cheers,

                        Dan
