Brings up a fair point - a better driver in a lower powered car will be faster round a track than an amateur in a higher powered one. I've heard about Stiglets antics... any money says he'd whip someone like me stupid round any track as I've never pushed my S2 to its limits on corners.

I don't think this a turbo vs non-turbo argument anyway... The question arose about how much could be extracted from 2.5 N/A lump - maybe the guy can't run competitively with a turbo on that engine - it might put him in different category for effective capacity - and then he's up against expensive monster turbo machines. Dunno - just playin devils advocate here.

a very valid point on drivers and classing there paul.

i know my car in the right hands would be a very rapid tool. just not mine. The s2 struggles to give me confidence in the corners like a quality chassis does. im not used to boosting through bends with 400+hp. id say i was faster in it with the bosst controller on the standard turbo or maybe thats a then and now thing.

if its a racing class thing then id say its best to wave goodbye to audi in general.

Wow, this thread really took off.

Perhaps the old I5 is not a god base?
Is the newer V.A.G 2.5L 20v I5 that's available only for north america, is it a better choice (head is said do derive from Lamborghini Gallardo)?
They are relatively cheap and having one shipped over should not be that big of a problem. But fitting it to a 01E gearbox will be...

Just thinking out loud and planing a fast and fun trackday car

how about something japanese. the engine designs are so much better out of the box.

honda integra type r would make a good trackday car.

turbo conversions are easy too. b18c is a great engine

i had an e30 beemer, that was a great car to drive, tweaked suspension and a 325 lump from an e36 would be a right hoot-pretty cheap aswell

i would honestly love to see a well tuned 2.5 10v or 20v N/A lump.... the noise would be incredible, as well as good allround driving. 20v would be better being crossflow but the 10v would sound lovely... Runner length on the throttle bodies would be the key to good torque and power.

I agree. It would be worth doing just to be different. I think it would be an awesome engine to build

If it doesn't need to be 5 pot...

consider the AEB engine from the A4, smaller, ligher and newer. Lots of tuning parts out there.

                      Good luck.

The last audi 80 touring cars were pushing 300bhp from 2lt n/a blocks.

how about a 6a engine even then.

look at crespo solid lifter kits for cheap lifters. get some solid lifter cams. (i got a set of shricks). have the head ported to within an inch of its life by cnc heads or similar
                        fit throttle bodies.

scat rods or standard with ford 289 arps for the rpm. custom pistons. abf headgasket.

standard crank or knife edged. diesel windage tray and own baffles fitted in sump.

G60 gearbox with VR first and second. if its audi longitudal then not sure on box.

gotta be good for 220 or so then. i see the issue being the lack of torque to pull a heavy audi.

Gti engineering used to make a 2.5 20v with little work other than the head and 92.8mm stroke with fuelling tweaks.
Careful when changing cams on these engines though, they have little low end torque in 2.3 form as it is. 250bhp would be easily possible and still driveable but you would need to rev over 4000rpm all the time to get the most out of it. Would suggest dumping the standard Fuel injection if aiming this high..20V at high revs does make a great noise though

When we used to run the Toyota super touring cars, 2.0 NA engines were producing around 300-310bhp, but the work that went into them was fairly significant (including reversing the cylinder head, but that was for transverse applications). Those engines ran up to 9,000rpm but had to be largely based on production blocks and heads, but the internal limitations were not as restrictive as other classes we used to run cars in ...cranks, rods and pistons were all allowed to be replaced as well as the valvetrains.

The entire engine management was standalone - we used Zytec - and the intake system was four throttle bodies with two injectors on each throttle. We also used coil on plug and ran with closed loop and lambda.
