    Who's the daddy ?

Oh I'm sooooooh chuffed with myself...

EPROM emulators don't support the turbo chip in AAN/ABY/ADU - well they do if you send megabucks but I had other plans with much more cost effective devices.

I designed and built a little circuit to convert timing from that funky EPROM onto the standard devices. Not rocket science in the big scheme of things, but I worked it all out from 1st principles - knowing how the uP runs a funky muxed bus architecture that I hadn't worked with before.

I ordered the bits and waited - a long time as some dopey things were on back order... Gave me time to research some more and I happened on an old digital cookbook which showed an identical circuit to mine - a good sign or what !

All the bits arrived on Wednesday, wired it up that night (tis a bit agricultiral looking) and buzzed it out last night - dropped in a standard chip this morning (programmed as copy of the funky one that came out)... Cranked up the engine and it started - well it just about started and stumbled and fumbled and just wasn't happy. Had that 'oh ****' moment but its a spare / development ECU.

So I buzz it all out again - everything built as per design - no mistakes, but clearly something is messing up the bus... So I looked at the access times on the standard chip - it was a 200ns device - perfectly good in the 3B ECUs... But tother chip in the ABY ECU was 120ns... So I find another chip with 120ns timing, plug it in - and its all good. Quick test drive and she's all good.

So frikkin what I hear you all cry ....

    1. Proved there is no need to spend buckets of cash on exotic emulators !

    2. Gives me real-time emulation of the turbo chip for the first time ever - allowing me to finalise V-Stream and X-Stream chipsets in realtime... and to help me unravel the final mysteries of temperature and altitude correction for boost.

    3. Also allowing me to quickly establish new maps with stiffer WG springs and/or alternative WGFVs... You get real tired of changing chips all the time - and erasing and burning and changing, erasing and burning...

    4. I might get the circuit cooked up on a proper PCB for others to enjoy. I suspect there is little interest for that on here, but thru some of the generic chiptuner forums I might get some traction... This problem chip gets asked about a LOT on those forums but until now there has been no solution available AFAIK. I might release it thru some of the emulator vendors.

Picture attached of the S2Central 'TCA' (Turbo Chip Adapter)... Its not that big - just had that box available to keep it tucked safely away.

Now just about ready for some long-awaited real-time mapping with a certain monster UrS4 tomorrow... Hope to unravel lots more chip mysteries with this gizmo.

    Value = priceless

I only understood the "I have made" part, you lost me with the rest, which makes it all the more impressive to me.

        Nice work Paul.

        cheers,

        Steve.

Who da man! Does this mean Paul you maybe doing real time remaps in the future or is this purely to aid your generic brand of chips with more real time related world data?

Real Time baby - real time...

I need some more features in the old software to help unlock all the Motronic secrets - well the important ones anyway.

I was joking with Jas11n on a different thread today that he is about OCD on collecting parts - I'm probably OCD on this stuff. Building hack boards, writing my map-finding software and don't get me started on disassembly - that really hurts your head.

Motronic keeps me awake at night - sad but true

Yes indeed Mark... I'd like to tweak that chipset on your Dad's AAN if thats still on the road (and vaguely healthy) - I wanna see how much boost the stock IC can take on the stock turbo before the air temps get too high for one thing. Really need an AFR guage though (hmmmmmmmm)...

That would be an interesting test! I'm RS2ing my S4 soon but the intercooler situation is worrying me a little.

I think you will struggle with the stock one using an RS2 turbo.
