RS2 turbo vs. GT2871R on original aby rods.

    Hi guys,

I am a little bit convused what to do with my setup.
I want to put more power in my aby coupe.
i allready have some parts, included a RS2 turbo, but i dont want to exchanche the rods,

Ive heard en read a lot about the torqeu that the RS2 turbo can make and can do to yourre rods.
I had a chat with someone tonight about my setup and now i am thinking at the Garret GT2871R.

But how much torqeu can this turbo make?
And what to do with the cams, i wanted to put 7A cams with the RS2 turbo in my car but if i install the GT2871R, wich cams are better, the standard ones or the 7A ones.
Are the 7A cams even neccesary with the GT2871R with his soon spool up?

I use the car for daily drive, and i want to have a safe car that not bending rods.
I now the safest way is to exchanche the rods for stronger ones ,but it costs a lot more money, and i dont have the place the put my engine out of the car.
A safe remap by a fine tuner for the RS2 turbo is also a possibility.

Im confused what to do now.

As long as the map is for stock rods you're fine. 2871 can be used with stock rods if mapped correctly. Mid range torque is lower due to avoiding surge but top end power will be higher. If you like the RS2 setup then quick with it.

Don't use the 7A cams as a pair, either use the exhaust cam, or get an RS2 exhaust cam and wheel.

you have a turbo that can provide you the torque to bend rods but have to use it well below its best to avoid damage therefore a smaller turbo would maybe be more usable tuned to its potential. i cant see the point in trying to guess when the rods will break and tune to just under it. its almost an impossible judgement. rods are all different and had different lifes.

changing the rods wont require engine out. its head off, sump off.

personally id pus the rods in. keep the standard cams. leave the 7a for high hp. the standards are miles better for everyday use. with smaller turbo's

Plenty of remapped RS2s out there making good torque.
Although I bet they're all really scared of impending rod failure. And shame on Porsche for sizing the turbo wrong.

We stay with the RS2 turbo and we chanche the rods for stronger ones!

You'll be ok if you stay below 1.9Bar with the RS2 turbo, anything above this, including a brief boost spike will turn your standard rods into ornaments...BTDT

I remember this from many years ago - was the verdict on that definitely excessive boost - or was it spark hop ?

I would say spark hop if it was on a 3B

Plenty of folks running 2bar+ on RS2 turbos on stock ADU's with no problems. MaRS2 on this forum is running 2.2bar at 3300rpm with no ill effects.
3B's will easily spark hop and bend rods at that cylinder pressure, but that is a whole different issue.
