    ur 10v quattro questions

    Hello all,

I am new to the audi coupe quattro scene. (currently have a 190e Evolution and audi
    a4 b6)
Im thinking of buying a cheaper 10V quattro, non turbo probably?!
I intend to fit a more powerful turbocharged engine and also fit the sport quattro bodywork to it.

The main things im wondering are:
    - What engines can i go for that will fit and mate up to the gearbox correctly?
    - What are the easiest converted engines with regards to loom???

    Thanks in advance
    Nick

The 10v, 20v and S2 looms are completly different. The early 10v's have no ecu as such, so a lot of relays are also very different. The 20v uses hitachi ecu's (2 different versions) and the S2 uses Bosch (again, 2 different versions) so any engine change recquires a loom change. GBoxes are compatible, but gear ratios are different and some are stronger than others.

Depending on what you want, it could be cheaper and easier to buy a turbo model in the first place unless you're thinking of a UR quattro and not an S2.

Yep. That's the old Type 85 chassis. I'm not too familiar on the differences between the turbo and non-turbo. The S2 was the newer type 89 chassis.

If you go here or here you might get a more informative answer as to how easy a conversion would be.

However, if it's that shape you want, the best idea in my opinion would be to get yourself a 10v non turbo quattro and put a 20v turbo engine in to that from the newer S2

yeah thats what i was thinking of doing.

it wasnt necesarilly the age i was looking at just the shape of the car with that example.

What about the later 1.8t 20v engine from mk4 golf gti for example. will that mount up to the gearbox?

The B3 chassis cars came with 1.8 and 2.0 4 cylinder engines, I would assume that the 1.8 20V would mate up but that's not reall the speciality of this forum. Better to try Audi Fans, club audi on that one or classic audi for the typ 85 chassis. A B3 80 sport quattro would be ideal for this conversion IMO.

By the time you finish converting a B2 10v you might as well save up and get a proper UR quattro, converting a 10v coupe quattro will be a big job and you'll basically need a UR to get all the bits off and then source the body pannels (Ker Innotek?) and suspension, brakes etc. etc.

If you do go for a 10v coupe quattro then a B3 sourced 7A 2.3 20v engine would be a good upgrade IMO, 170bhp out the box, 200 possible and it should slot into a car with the 2226cc KV engine just fine. Othewise a 3B 2.2 20v turbo out of a 200 or early S2 would fit best. Total cost for the 7A about £2k all done, 3B, £5k maybe, not sure about fibreglass wide arch kits or the widebody suspension differences tho, better check at the websites mentioned above on those as we're more into the B3/B4 chassis cars as a rule.

get it from an A4, already longitudinal, Golf is transverse so all the manifolds etc. need to be modified or changed.

The non turbo car will not have the wide wheel arches, best to go straight for a real ur (10vTurbo) On the early WRs the ECU only runs the ignition curve, boost is mechanical and fuel is also mechanical K-Jetronic. However you can convert to full ECU control either by aftermarket (eg 034) or converting to Motronic from an S2 in which case you'd need the ECU and loom and injectors and some sensors etc.

What i was planning to do was to get the cheaper version of that shape (without wide arches) then fit the sport quattro kit to it. Otherwise its a wastes to get one with wide arches already just to remove them!!
I was considering the 10v turbo model which i think is 195ish bhp? this is if i decide not to go for the cheaper non turbo option. but whats the tuneability of these?
Whats the typical cost of a s2 conversion???
