    RS2 ECU Upgrades

I've been getting more and more requests about these recently. To avoid lots of repititive PMs here is some information to keep in mind.

I can upgrade an ABY or AAN ECU to RS2 specification - with factory or upgraded chipsets. Or I can upgrade an original RS2 ECU. More about spec's below.

One of the really annoying things about the RS2 chipset is that it needs a 3bar MAP sensor as that is how the software is scaled to operate. This means you can theoretically run up to 2bar boost on such an ECU - highly improbable for an RS2 turbo of course. Thats not so much the annoyance - its the cost of the only 3bar MAP currently available as drop in replacement part - the VMAP-D at anywhere from GBP 130-150 each. It works great, but the cost is off-putting to a lot of people.

I am looking to try an alternative 3bar MAP from Motorola but the packaging is somewhat strange and I need time to work that out. Meantime you have to wonder do you really need a 3bar MAP device for a nice running RS2.

The factory chipset only runs to 1.3bar max anyway so its about curious that Audi / Porsche / Bosch decided to go with a 3bar MAP - the 2.5bar device would have been adequate. Clearly someone was thinking about higher boost levels here...

The RS2 chipset that I currently have available - lets call it 'N - stream'. This runs to about 1.5bar maximum so it is possible with 2.5bar MAP.

I am working on a higher boosting 'V - Stream' for the RS2 which I'm hoping to get up to 1.7bar assuming the torque levels aren't deemed to be too risky. This will of course need a 3bar MAP sensor.

    So - what to do...

My proposal is to offer a version of the N-Stream that runs with the 2.5bar MAP device (already inside ABY/AAN) to keep costs down for this upgrade. Normal 'homefry' price applies on this at GBP250... And if anyone wants to pay extra for a 3bar MAP version then thats OK - just let me know which setup you want.

The V-Stream pricing will likely be higher as a fair bit more development is needed and things like AFR measurements in real-time will be important so that I can offer this as a generic upgrade. Estimating GBP350 for that setup and inclusive of the alternative 3bar MAP device that I am looking at.

I'll offer a 'multimode' upgrade as well that contains N and V streams on a real-time switchable setup. This would include the 3bar MAP device and require a couple of external switches to interact with the ECU via a cabled plug. This setup shall also contain an eco/valet/spouse mode to disable active boost control. I've spoken to a few people about this and agreed that a fair price for this kind of complexity and capability is GBP450.

There will be preferential pricing for anyone upgrading from RS2 N-Stream to the V-Stream or the multimode package when it becomes available as those users will have already paid GBP250 towards total price of the alternative setup.

A 15% discount against the difference is what I have in mind... So if you have RS2 N-Stream and wish to upgrade to V-Stream it only costs an additional GBP85. An upgrade from N-Stream to multimode would be GBP170.

Finally here are some boost levels and estimate power / torque figures to consider.

    Stock RS2
    1.3bar from 3000-5000rpm
    1.1bar at 6000rpm
    0.7bar at 7000
    MAX Torque = 410Nm
    MAX Power = 315bhp

    RS2 N-Stream
    1.5bar from 3000-5000rpm
    1.4bar at 6000rpm
    1.3bar at 7000
    MAX Torque ~ 440-460Nm (TBC)
    MAX Power ~ 340-360bhp (TBC)

    RS2 V-Stream
    1.7bar from 3000-5000rpm
    1.5bar at 6000rpm
    1.4bar at 7000
    MAX Torque ~ 475-525Nm (TBC)
    MAX Power ~ 350-380bhp (TBC)

Requires the following items on the car -

    RS2 turbo
RS2 exhaust manifold (or better such as Wagner)
RS2 intercooler (or better e.g. Wagner item)
    RS2 injectors (360ccpm at 3bar)
    4bar fuel pressure regulator

Any more questions on this - you know where I am... I'll post any dyno figures and GTech data as soon as it becomes available.

    Cheers,

Will there be a similar option to upgrade from the current standard N-stream to the standard V-stream for us folk too poor to go full RS2 spec?

Paul, am i right in saying the V-Stream is only intended for engines with uprated rods? And can you make these true plug and play or will i need to invest in a AFR meter?

You can put me down for the full kit and kaboodle when i get my project engine going, i.e. high boost RS2 setup with switchable chipsets

Oh yes - there will be deals on those upgrades too. Separate thread will cover that. I need to collect some more data and Beta feedback before those go into prime time.

There is no need for uprated rods with N or V stream... Obviously it is better to do that - but big money as you know. Max boost on V stream should be in 500Nm territory so safe for RS2 rods.

The intent is to make them plug and play... will probably have to err on side of rich to accomodate for variance in MAFs and such.

AFR shouldn't be necessary, but having one fitted does give you that confidence that all is well - though they can be a bit distracting on daily use. If you fit one bigger injectors then I could probably do some custom work to get the best out of your RS2 setup with even higher boost levels and the uprated rods you have - IIRC...

Have all as above and ready to go and my ecu has been fried but with what etc I dont know. Liking the multimode but one question

I havent changed the rods on my stock ABY engine with 110 k on it, has new clutch, water pump, cam belt etc .

The concern is that the V stream maybe 2 agressive so do I just stay with a healthy N stream.

Fuel usage? of course it will be more and dependant on the heavy foot but realistically for Motorway miles will the multimode be beneficial and in what way.

Thanks paul and am sure others maybe thinking the same sort of questions.

To be clear... When I use the terms 'N stream' and 'V stream' - they are simply labels to differentiate the behaviour of different chipsets.

The regular ABY homefry today is 'N Stream' and some Beta folk have 'V Stream' on trial now.

There is N and V Stream available for 3B (in the works with couple of Beta testers about)

This thread is about N & V stream for the RS2

They are all entirely different chipsets...

You can think of the N-stream to be a Normal generic ECU upgrade - tried and tested widely especially on ABY.

The V-Stream on ABY and 3B builds boost with more Vigour shall we say... The max boost level is no higher than N-Stream but it spools faster and without any perverse temperature compensation that Audi put in (which was preserved on N Stream). Boost at the redline on the ABY V-Stream is a little more aggressive to squeeze out max from the turbo. A bigger intercooler is really recommended to get the best out of the V-Stream if you are caning it on a regular basis.

The 'eco' mode is a fairly coarse mechanism that disable active boost control. Essentially you run with mechanical boost - approx 0.4bar on factory spring - as such you use a lot less fuel when driving about. However at steady state cruising - say 70 on the motorway there will be no benefit from eco mode - its essentially a boost limiter which reduces fuel used during acceleration. Its also a handy switch to know about when handing the car keys to a garage or your wife - depending on how much trust you have !

So basically V stream is king by miles and as far as economy is concerned just roll it along to the 80 - 90 mph cruising speed to maintain the same economy as N stream?

                      V stream - £350 inc 3 bar

                      + £150 for wife mode

How much would it be for a aby ecu to just have 2 chips in it both with standard aby so that I could have them remapped to my setup when its done.

i.e. on 1st setting I could have it remapped for the car once done

2nd setting would be remap optimised for nitrous on top of that.

As a beta tester who took the muti-mode with v-stream round the ring i can say its a fair bit "better" (i.e. more aggresive) than the standard n-stream.

I posted my findings on my project thread - http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthr...52&page=12#177

Is there anyway that y ou can run a multimode N and V stream so that you dont run switch to ECO on mechanical boost that way when you feel a bit V stream it is but for and a smoother delivery N it is.

                            What do you reckon?

That is the way the multi-mode works already.

By default the ECU runs n-stream.

You have 2 switches, one to turn on v-stream the other to turn on eco mode, meaning you can have the following configurations:

                              (off/off) n-stream
                              (off/on) n-stream eco
                              (on/off) v-stream
                              (on/on) v-stream eco

You can change the mode as you are driving, which is quality!
