  • Fuel Filter

    Hello Everybody,

    Today something occurs.
I stopped the car at garage, and 10min latter, I decided to go out again.
So, I try to turn it on, but doesn´t works!

I am looking for the filters, as air filter, fuel filter and the other here at Brasil. This is not so easy to take.

I have disassembled the air box, and try to turn the car on without air filter (this air filter need to be replaced, but I still looking one for it.),and nothing different.
Than, my next step, will be the fuel pump. Because that noise that it make when your engine is on, I do not remember if it does.
I know that it is located near the rear right wheel, but where?
It is an external pump???? or it is located into the fuel tank?

So, about 20min passed and I try to turn it on again, and it works... How can it do???

Later, my suspection is the fuel filter... Because if it was a original part, may have 10 years ... And can obstruct the fuel flows.

My question is... where is this fuel filter and the fuel pump????

    Thank´s lot!

If you have a Coupe, there are instructions on changing a fuel filter and photos in this thread http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3191 If you have an Avant it is much more difficult but search the forum - I did see a few threads about that.

The fuel pump is located in the fuel tank - also try the search function.

A common problem with those symtpons is the Cam sensor is about to stop working - the heat of the car means it won't start - You could try pouring sopay water down the back of the cam cover to see if it helps - but you will more than likely need it replaced very soon.

I've been stuck in a petrol station for 30minutes when it happened!

Have to agree with Doug on this as a likely cause - not uncommon...

After a similar problem, I am now discounting the security system! I sometimes hear the fuel pump immediately before cranking, when I do it starts. Sometimes I hear it more faintly and then it doesn't start...my problem is linked directly to the fuel pump. I will replace it with a Bosch motorsport item to see if my fault is cured.

Lee the neighbours audi 80 had a whirring noise when the fuel should have been pumping but it wasn't. It was the pump just had weakened terribly. The fuel pump relay was very ill as well.

              Nasty to trace the fault!

Been looking for an image in the on-line family album, but with no joy - I hate that Russian website sometimes... Maybe the parts boys can find a pic for you...

The standalone version is not much better for showing this. Heres the only pic I could find of it in the family album:

                        I've highlighted it blue.

                          Hey friends,

                          I found the problem...
The problem wasn´t the cam sensor, neither the fuel pump nor the fuel filter.

It was an electrical problem, the wires that energize the 5 fuel injectors have broken the plug, than without contact, no injector...
