I understand your concerns Mark, the bearings should have a good supply of oil and will not suffer undue stress during the starting process as you will not be giving it any welly and loading the bearings. Doug said he will not be using any boost during the initial runs. this in turn will not stress the bearings.

My 7A engine and I think the S2 engine use 10/30 IIRC, a cheap supermarket version of that would be ok. GTX is too good to run in an engine I feel. The rings will bed themselves in very quickly. I had to rebuild a midget engine for someone who started the unrun engine on Mobil 1. It smoked like a dog and the rings never bedded in. The block had to be honed again and a new set of 73.5mm Cosworth Rings were required. The rings were about £100. A lot for a new Midget engine but maybe not for an Audi.

The initail start up and running in on an 'A' series engine is very important. The Audi engine is an old engine as well ( design and materials date to the early 80's.) this means to me that it needs a bit of care.

A friend has a Vincent Motorbike and he has made it up to date with fancy American pistons and a Nikasil lined bore. It did not need any running in but he has had compression problems because the rings skate over the liner. He went acros the USA with this bike and when he went to collect the bike from the docks in Bristol it wouldn't start easily, ( no compression). he'd used the bike for 3,000 miles in high temperatures but it was very cold at the docks ( in October last year.
Porsche 928's have nikasil lined bores and they go on for interstellar mileages.

Sorry if I've added this to your shopping list now!

    I hope this makes sense!

If you want expert advise then ask an expert. Its all very well us giving you our ideas, but if you **** your engine up then its not my fault

Have a word with the ppl building the engines and see what they suggest, they have been doing it for years and know best, otherwise they would have gone out of business due to warranty claims.

Just remembered and found where I got the inspiration for my doubts about this subject, I read it over on the excellent Kruemmer last year, starting with message #1204, a little debate about this, it got quite heated too.

I agree, I was given this advice by Quasar / Techno Engines, they are Formula Ford specialists. they are real engineers and I have taken all my machining there for years.

They have built all sorts of engines from Lawn mowers to 1950 Maseratis.

I signed up to the kreummer group and kept getting spam from them!

            I will try again!

I think that the best thing that I would be happy with doing, would be using the oil Steve used following his recent rebuild (he did say but I cant remember what it was), his engine sounds sweet enough and he even had the head off again during the running in process and got another look at the bores which were fine with no glazing.
I'll ask him what he used and go with that.

Sorry Tom, I didn't see your 2 posts on the previous page. I wasn't trying to argue with you. I know about 'A' series engine having built about 30 of them. I have never built an Audi Engine so I am nor familiar with their foibles.

                Everyone has different ideas.

I will screw it together and take a picture.

It is very simple but I think that you could build a truck engine on it!

I asked Castrol Technical and they advised good old GTX for the bedding in process and RS 10/60 after. I used a couple of 5ltr tins for the first 500 miles. First change at about 100 miles and one at 500 miles. At £9.99 for 5ltrs you could change it as much as you like in the first 1000 miles

I had a look at that site also, a while back. I understand his theory but I don't know if I could do that to something I had just lovingly built. I would rather do the tried and tested method, IMHO.
Anyone asked Kieth @ Dialynx what he does? I used Aelred's advice to run my ur in, and she is singing beautifully.
