    ABY engine rebuild cost?

Just out of interest, how much would it roughly be for a freshen up?
Everything kept standard, ie no uprated rods etc.

What parts would be replaced? Piston rings, gaskets etc?

An engine refresh like that is 'just' gaskets, oil seals and new bearings all round. Plus a new oil pump to be safe. Plus timing belt and new tensioner. Maybe a new camshaft chain too for good measure.

Suggest uprated bolts from ARP on the head and main bearings are a worthy upgrade. Replacements from Audi are throwaway stretch bolts. ARP ones are not.

You shouldn't need to mess with piston rings unless there is a compression problem... If renewing the rings you'll need to get the bores honed at an engine shop so they seal properly.

The cost of parts isn't the critical thing here - its the cost of time and attention to detail which makes it all worthwhile.

As a ball park figure I'd say you are into 500-800 territory if renewing all bolts along the way and replacing the major items mentioned above and don't have any complex machining operations along the way. You should seriously consider getting a bottom end balance though - with a lighter flywheel - as that makes a big difference to the feel of the motor. Just sweeter to rev out and more responsive.

Mild port work on the head should reap benefits too - without doing anything risky or extreme - just attention to detail again - very time consuming though.

It was more just a thought regarding buying a high miler, just to freshen things up, not a rebuild due to failed components etc

I wouldn't worry about mileage... Mine's not had the head off at 140k and I know plenty other motors that go even longer before any real work is required.

I did have to do the cam cover oil seals though - and sump gaskets - messy and fiddly but very cheap to do... Don't be freaked by an oily engine bay as that is the two most likely sources. Damaged PCV pipes would be 3rd possible source.

I know they are good for high mileage as a rule, but at 171k would sort of life could be expected from it

Another ~100k unless you are unlucky or it has ran on rubbish oil for lots of its life.

If it is smoke free now and pulling strongly then I really wouldn't worry. A quick compression and/or leakdown test will confirm the general state of things. Its things like hoses which I would be more concerned about if they show any signs of aging with cracks and such.

Meant to say as well - belts are the sort of thing could let you down on a high miler... Change all those unless you know they are fresh.

If the worst of the worst happened you could source a engine cheap enough to replace it.

tbh as above I would not worry too much.....

These engines go on for ages if looked after, some on here are over 220k miles on original headgaskets!

So long as it hits 5 bar of oil pressure on startup, 1.5+bar at warm idle, it does not smoke or any knocking noises at startup, does not use any coolant, enthusiast owned so oil changes every 5k miles with good quality fully synthetic, its going to go on for miles and miles yet!

                    Ooooh just like mine!

I'm looking at £1000-£1500 for a rebuild with new shells, mains, bolts, oil pump, gaskets etc. I already have ARP head studs and will replace the clutch with a Sachs sport sintered and some H beam rods, total cost £2k ish, not that bad for an engine that can take 700Nm in the future.

High mileage isn't a problem as stated. My old 180k mile 3B was just starting to use an annoying amount of oil, about 100ml/1000mile with no apparent leaks. Before that I didn't need to worry about topping up the oil between changes.
But when I stripped the car the cam cover was leaking at the back of the head, and drying up on top the bell housing.

friend of mine did an extensive rebuild on a customers stock aby avant ( due to fooked piston rings) came to just over 2k . That wasnt including refurbing the turbo but was using all oem parts.

I would definately be putting a set of H Beams in there IF you had to have it apart.

If the bores have worn badly its going to need a bore and a set of pistons.

                              What the piston/bore tolerance on a I5
