    Help - Engine insertion

Any tips for getting the engine onto the gearbox? I spent 2 hours tonight and gave up.

I've had enough of the car the last 2 days - got all my bits on Friday and built the engine on a stand yesterday. When I eventually borrowed a n engine crane today I just could not get it to mate up - I think I need to drop the subframe to get it to go straight on - instead of trying to get it in at an angle.

Doug, what clutch/flywheel are you using? Did you change anything to the so-called spiggot bearing? I recall having a similar issue on my car where the input shaft is 18mm and the bearing in my flywheel was 15mm, and it took me 2 days to figure why the damn engine wouldn't mate completely to the gearbox...

Cheers and keep up the good work mate!

        Looks absolutely beautiful BTW

I haven't personally done this for a while but have you used a clutch centering tool or made sure the clutch centre is lined up perfectly with the spigot bearing?
Then you will need to offer it up nice and straight. Being carefull not to damage that aforementioned needle roller, you did fit a new one didn't you? The clutch kit usually has one I think along with the thrust race. Dont force anything, when its aligned right it will slip right in, fnaarr

It has a new spigot bearing - but I never actually checked the difference! I'll check that again though! The problem is getting it alligned to push in - the subframe is in the way - I am going to drop the subframe and angle the gearbox so it is more horizontal.

I still haev the dual mass thing - The clutch is my original ABY - although it has a sachs plate and the other bit is LUK - they have been uprated by Precision Clutch - same place that is doing Toms, Steves and Marks.

The clutch alignment tool makes sure the clutch is concentric with the centre line of the crankshaft/ spigot bush. If the clutch is off centre it would probably not go in ever!. Halfords used to sell a centring tool. I don't know if the still do....
The thrust race is the bit that presses onto the clutch to operate it. Some cars have a carbon faced thrust bearing other have a proper bearing. It sits on the clutch operation arm.

Thanks - I just looked at etka - I will get hold of release bearing tomorrow - hopefully.

And I'll need to find a tool as well

Doug, the Halfords tool is universal. There are a variety of spigot shafts and clutch centre tools in the kit. Sykes Pickavant make them and other people sell them. Easy to make if you have a lathe...

Looking good Doug, how long did it take you to build the engine up and what did you torque the ARP fasteners up to on your Arrows?

                    Cheers,

                    Mark.

I had a similar problem on the 100, the needle bearing for the rr engine is no use for the type 85 gearbox, a different bearing is needed. probably nothing to do with your application but....hey just got in from the pub

Sorry Doug, thrust race = release bearing. Well worth replacing now, especially as your clutch has been uprated. Mine was about to fall apart when we changed the clutch recently. Its the part that always makes a whirring noise when you press down on the clutch on high milers.

Stick has described the centering tool, you basicaly need 2 concentric diameters on one bar, the one that fits the bearing in the middle of the flywheel and the one thats a snug fit through the clutch centre spline. Could make one on the lathe if we had dimensions. Or perhaps a socket / bar combo and careful eyeballing might work?
