have removed the bearing caps, undone the cam position sensor, but cant remove it, as theres no way of extracting it from behind the cam pulley?

Not sure what you mean (Remove the cam pulley no) if you dont have a cam pulley locking tool Just stick a screw driver in to block it, the key on the cam pulley is fragile so proceed with care. it only torqued to 60nm
You need to pull the cam pulley off, best method is to grab hold of the cam with a plumbers wrench and undo the nut with the other hand. You will need to put the bearing caps and timing belt back on to hold eveything in place.
