Reality check & big spring warning

Got a call from a guy today - off another forum...

Quick bit of history first - Did an ECU upgrade for his RR (20V UR) some time back - he wasn't happy with the boost levels and I advised he must have an airleak. Sure enough some hose clips were loose and all came up to spec.

Then against my advice he fits a 1.8bar WG spring (chips expect factory 1.4) and after 10 minutes blatting about he blows the turbo... Said it was amazingly quick and built boost like mad - no surprise, but some people cannot be told !

Then he wants advise on going to a bigger turbo seeing as the old one is dead. Took ages to explain that even going to RS2 turbo is going to give him more work - with EM, uprated bearing shells and metal gasket... Then theres the whole bendy conrod thing to consider as well - especially on single coil RR or 3B.....

Its a big shock for some folk who think that you just bolt on a bigger turbo, magic happens and more power appears.

I've been toying with the idea of slightly more aggressive boost with a 1.9bar spring... haven't been brave enough to play with it - especially when the car is finally working again!

So to me that just says "wait for the V-stream"...

Hey Ross if it's the 1.9 034 spring then it's absolute and will only allow 0.9 mechanical boost. I have one for the Avant.

The key here though only install one in conjunction with the necessary ECU mods for your stock turbo don't bother just get the homefry

Regarding this guy, does he believe in Pixies and Santa Claus?

so is there a selection of springs available. wheres the best place to get one.

your right paul but unfortunately some only learn by their own mistakes.

in all honesty i still dont see much point in boosting much over 1.3bar on a standard unit. also cant see why people rev them past 6k either. i often chuckle at those who say the k24 makes power to 7k.

Sounds like the kind that expects boost leaks and other probs to magically disappear with an ecu upgrade Paul.

Ross - I'm up for that... So is a few other folk... But V-Stream plus big bad WG spring is something I call 'X-Stream' - do you like it or what ?

Send me a PM if interested on that... with a multimap ECU it would be quite easy to try out... And/Or send me a big spring and I'll do some development work before hand... hard to guess how much to reduce WGFV cycles for same target boost that is building more rapidly courtesy of big spring.

I bought mine from Ultimot.de but I would say they are in the more expensive end. Actually running a 0.9 bar spring with the eboost2 using dual port setup, and that works really well
