    make it faster... please help

I have a 1981 audi coupe 5 speed FWD non turbo, its over 25 years old so no emissions checks anymore. i would like to make the car faster so
    • removing emissions is a option if anyone know what and how to do so? i have already removed the cat converter.
    • also i would like to know what parts are needed to convert my car to a turbo?? Boost:mischeif:
    • if anyone has any thoughts on making me run quicker better faster stronger please let me know.

Are you in america or is that just the flag the forum assigns straight away

is your car carbed or injection and is it a 10v/20v model?

If you have any pictures etc that might help us let you know what can be done. Getting rid of the cat is a good start

              sorry couldn't resist.

sounds ok then. so its a 5 pot 10v. ever thought of a supercharger. easier than a turbo. fits better as the 2v heads are counterflow.

have a look at a G60. its should flow enough for a 10v as its just ok on a 16v. alternatively an eaton m60 or the like from a 230 merc compressor.

twin screw kits are good for hp but very noisy.

id say avoid procharger and the like due to its turbo like design. my mate did a subaru impreza sport with a procharger. standard ECU the lot. 200hp.

cams will provide very little unless pistons and compresion sorted. FI is maybe the best and easiest to do.

sounds like you are in the states. have a chat with danny at SNStuning. give bahnbrenner a call. look to seek some info on potential. maybe easiest to fit digi-1 and have SNS tune it unless it wont run 5 injectors.

hope this helps, welcome to the madhouse

keep fwd box, big work to make 4wd.
have the head ported and polished, schrik cam
                straight through exhaust
depends how healthy your engine is as its no spring chick
there are better audi s to tune really

I agree with the above comments. It will probably cost you more to get it well over 200bhp than simply selling it and buying a 230bhp S2 (which you can then bump upto 285bhp for less than £500).

If you really want to tune this engine then as already said, head work, cams and exhaust as a match work flow is gonna give some nice improvements but without a super or a 50-shot nitrous you'll still be behind a stock S2.

Also, how much power do you want to put through a nose heavy FWD car? I used to run a 2.8 V6 Coupe modded to a shade under 200bhp and that was just silly in the wet or pulling out of junctions.

                  Cheers n

Think the biggest issue for him (if his location flag is correct) is the cost of an s2, afaik america never got them. Only option he'd have is transplanting an engine from a different motor i.e. s4/s6/200 turbo.

                    +1 for the nitrous

get a 20v 7a engine in there, cheap and easy conversion, mental front wheel drive as i've had people chasing my s2 in one of them. Nitrous works very very well on them as has been shown

Ah, I just assume that everyone is from Blighty unless they say otherwise. Why is the default flag the S&S and not simply nothing until selected?

                          Jesse,

                          Am assuming you're stateside.

http://www.pistonheads.com/SALES/1139028.htm NCTS - just used for reference.

I know it's a completely different car, but before spending any money on your current 81 Coupe, consider the following.

Sell the one you've bought and buy a 95 S6. i.e. the next size up from the B4 80 (S2) body. You get the same great 20vt engine, a six speed box, climate control, galvanised body(?) and most importantly - 4 wheel drive - aka quattro.

You can spend all the money you like on your 81 Coupe, swop out the engine and box, the interior etc., but it will be all too expensive and pointless when you are finished as it is still FWD. You will not be able to put the power down or revel in the traction of a quattro. Once you've been exposed to quattro traction and a turbo,it's a real step back to drive anything else.

I know it may be a more expensive car at first, but all of the advantages mentioned above are on it from day one, all you have to do is make it work as it left the factory, chip it and clean and polish it. And you have a brilliant car right away without any effort. Serch harder than noraml for a good inexpensive one in good or retrievable condition. There presumable is more of these being broken over there than 81 Coupes?

Agreed it does not look the same or is not the same body of your 81 Audi, but it is not the long, hard , and expensive road of modifying the 81 Coupe to get it partially comparable to the S6.

The above is just my own opinion to allow you to hopefully fully consider your options thoroughly and realistically before your start down a particular one way road.

This is not intended as a lecture but just, hopefully good, food for thought.

If you final aspirations / desires for the function of the 81 Coupe can be met with relatively few mods and no turbo or engine swop, then the above is slightly superfluous, but this site is too dangerous, whatever Audi you have and if you visit this site for any length of time your mind will start ticking on - what if, well just this bit, it's effectively a legal drug.

In summary, quattro should be the overriding factor and the number of doors required both now and in the future for determining what car to buy, drive, and sink loads of money into ! All the other components of the car can be changed / upgraded comparatively easily.

                          HTH.

                          Kind regards.

What he said there - I completely agree...

Whilst a ~200hp 10V engine might be fun - there is a fair degree of complexity to get you there - and you'll never get the traction with FWD to really enjoy it in all weathers...

That and an S4/S6 will be so much easier to find stateside. They are lovely big smooth powerful motors and only minor mods are required to get into improved handling and approach 300bhp with an ECU upgrade... heading towards 400bhp is an easy bolt-on affair with no engine or gearbox internals to worry about. Same crankshaft as your 10V engine - now THAT is engineering for you !

well thanks all for you opinions i guess ill put this on the back burner and look for a quattro and then start a new project, 20v turbo engine is the way to go? so quattro turbo(a S2 is very unlikely in the US. i guess ill finish cleaning her up and be rid of her shame only 43,883 original miles runs great.
thanks alot all for the help maybe ill just put her in the garage and get the supercharger and make a nice daily driver. i have been mainly into DSM eclipses as i have a 91 FWD at 297BHP and with a limited slip differential its drives great in any weather. i have always longed the thought of a AWD beast that audi can bring me !
