Checking timing with strobe light on I5

I have been wanting to do this on my own,or at a garage, but since there are no spark cables on the I5 engine, can somoene point out an alternate way to check it?

Although Marc has checked this for VEMS i want to double check it myself so that the correct settings are used in VEMS and the timing deg.are the ones that are supposed to be.

    thanks

I just purchased five cheep leads and connected them between each plug and coil pack enabling you to connect the strobe light.

    Hope it helps..

I was about to say Vagcom, but then I recalled that you are using a crude, aftermarket engine management

There is no real info to give.

If you take the boot off of the coil pack you just need cheep leads that have the correct fitting to connect the coil pack to the plug.

Sorry i dont have anymore info. It will all become clear if you take it apart and have a look.

NO just the cheapest you can find.. You will only be using them at tick over engine speeds..

Get a strobe with built in leads like this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Gunstons-Strob...d=p3286.c0.m14

Take the coil cover off, remove number one boot then plug one end of the light in the coil the other on the plug.

Put the coil cover back on but not too tight so you dont crush the ht leads.

hmm that is another solution indeed. i would think that the V6 coils should work, right?

I want to check the timing offset between 034 Standalone and actual motor timing on my new engine. I have a feeling its a bit off compare to the last motor i had in there. Last year i used a timing light (the old school) made to go around the spark plug wire. Since i don't have any spark plug...

A80Avant When checking did you check using the front pulley or the flywheel mark?

If I understand it correctly then at idle with varm engine I should read 10 degrees in VAGCOM. If the number is 11 or 12 then timing is of by 2 degrees.

Could I then use this to adjust my "TDC after trigger" in VEMS or should I rather use a strobe light?

Also what do you aim the strobe light at? A step by step guide would be great.
