id have a guess at a compression test is not quite right. this can be many things. onyl way is to take her apart.

my experience with no compression was counting fron front. 1 ok, 2 ok, 3 ok, 4 ,ok, 5 none.

inspection saw that cam had snapped between the 2 lobes on 4 so had a valve stuck closed all the time. on 5 both were stuck open all time. no damage caused, except to drop another cam in.

the garage may have used the old its ****ed line as a stripdown in labour may cost 1/2 new engine. also they may not want to dabble with such a costly engine, maybeb dont know enough. however it may cost next to nothing except labour to put right.

id have a word with tom if you are not into stripping engines. ask him to flip the top off for you and give his opinion. maybe a few quid well spent.

I suppose the other way of looking at this is if I'm thinking of making bottom end upgrades then it might be worth rebuilding the one that went bang last night.. or is it a 'don't even think about it' situation once a valve has dropped through?
Speak to All Audi in Bristol too, Neil or Alex might be interested in doing it for you.

spoke to the mechanic - he took the rocker cover off and saw that the broken valve had forced the spark plug back up through the head and that there was a hole in the piston. that was enough for him, he declared her dead and sewed her back up

If the broken valve has hit the spark plug and pushed it up then the head coils and rocker cover should have extensive damage to it.
When my cossie engine lost a valve it damaged the plug so it couldent get out, and i had a lot of metal parts lying in my im.
It may only have burnt the piston and melted the spark plug m8
