    Whats the symptoms?

Do the dash lights come on? if they do , when you turn the key, does the starter turn? will it crank but not start? Has it got an immobiliser and is the battery FULLY charged? feed us some more info...

left the car at tesco and went back after eastenders still wouldnt start it was turning over but just wouldnt go ,anyway after 1/2 hr trying thopught better leave it at tesco cause have to get up at 5 for long weekend away in scotland so went to let them know that the car would have to be left until i got back,it turns out that if you breakdown at tesco yopu get free breakdown assistance ,so the call the rac and i goto wait in the car ,being a female alone at night you think that they wouldn't leave me there til 10.55 but there i sat (the store shut at 10) anyway rac man came and that f***king B*****d startedv first time, which leads me to the conclusion that i may need new ht leads especially as i washed the car and it was raining at the time and had stopped about 8 giving it a few hrs to dry out .Is this a common problem on audis as i had a similar problem on my 2.3 e coupe good news though rac man says that it was running as sweet as a nut but what would he know hadnt even heard of an s2

could be worth checking the two sensors used for the timing that are attached to the side of the gearbox.

If one of these is faulty the engine will crank all day but wont start.

NO way both have failed simultaneously unless by some weird fluke. The ECU just can't determine which is duff sometimes when they are out of spec.

I would change the CMP (camshaft position sensor) first - it is a more common failure than the reference or speed sensors at the crank.

Change the camshaft position sensor (CMP) for piece of mind. I personally know of several cars that had annoying intermittent problems like this.

The CMP may also be known to the Audi spanner boys as the hall effect sensor. Its G40 on the schematic and lives just behind the camshaft sprocket.

Dunno part number and price offhand- Check with VAGparts.COM first before Audi tries to rip off a limb.

SHOULD be easy for a decent dealership. They should be able to quote an hourly rate plus the parts. Reckon on 1-2 hours...

Had my car for half a year now and my first real problem has occured, it won't start!
Seems like it cranked (but didn't start) on the first go, but directly after that it didn't crank anymore and kinda makes a rapid sorta "frefrefref" rattle. Sometimes when I let the key go I hear my alarm chirp twice (as if arming!? but it doesn't arm).
Maybe I've got a sensor problem?
Doesn't seem to be a battery problem as dash lights and all come on. (I always have only 9V untill cars rolls for a bit but that never was a problem).
It has gotton a pretty bit colder here since winter is coming, could that have to do with it?

Any idea's appreciated cause this sucks

Edit: I just read this thread and made me thinking maybe it is the battery, the rapid "frefre" sound could be described as ticking I guess. Maybe those 9V before roll aren't normal? hehe :wacked:

Edit2: oh, and another thing: my right front is flat all of a suddon, but that must be a coincedence

the fact that your alarm is chirping after you try to start the car definitely points to battery - pulls all battery power for the start and then the alarm resets on receiving some volts back.

that sounds mighty like my battery problem - original battery was knackered, slotted in a new Bosch battery and all is well again. The sound is the starter motor.

                            Choice of two:

                            1) Buy a new battery
                            2) Check the battery acid levels in the old one and top up - then charge it to see if that cures it.

                            HTH,
