Oooops, did I just f*** up? Crank bolt etc.

    Hey guys!
Just refitted an engine in my car after a major overhaul. The thing is.. I think I've done something rather stupid.

    1. I didn't unscrew the crank bolt on the engine i've switched from. That's a part I had planned on using with the new one. don't really see how I'm gonna put 400nm of torque on a motor lying on the floor. Any ideas?

    2. There's still a crank bolt in the engine I've switched to. There's no vibration damper though. I figured the bloke who had it before me had removed the vibration damper and just tightened the bolt a little. However it seems to be very tight. Is there some way to lock the engine without using the 2084 (Or was it 2079?) with the engine still in the car? Note that the clutch is new.

I'm just seeing problems right now. These problems usually solve themselves when i get down to the garage and take a look at things, but they seem to grow to new proportions whenever I'm away from there for a longer time.

what i did to undo the crank bolt when the engine was in the car was to lock the diff, stick the car in gear, hand brake on and my brother on the brake pedal, and a 3/4" breaker bar and socket. But thats just what i did, as for undoing one thats out of the car... Err good luck! Even with the genuine audi tool i had i couldnt hold the engine still

re the engine out of the car

I have had the same problem in the past, i ended up strapping the engine to the bench it was on.It was probably the highest torqued crank bolt i have come across aswell.I had a 2m pole on the end of the breaker bar,it was a ****er of a job

Tough one, locking crank is difficult.
I found heavy duty impact air gun worked for me but you need a crank locking tool and someone to steady engine.

Lock the flywheel. I think it was DJones who made a tool which bolted to the starter motor mounting and locked the flywheel in place.

I've used a very heavy (1" drive) impact gun to undo the crank bolt in the past, worked without locking the crank. Make sure you replace the pulley and the bolt, and DON'T under any circumstances use the gun to re tighten the bolt.

that is by far the easiest thing to do with the engine out indeed. At least it worked for me, what I did: remove the flywheel and make a tool out of a metal strip that you can bolt onto the crank (where the flywheel was mounted) and the starter motor mounting.

Agreed here - never done it myself though - lock the crank with a tool made for the flywheel teeth and then buzz it off with an impact wrench (less stressful than strapping engine down and swinging on the bolt with a scaffold pipe - though needs must sometimes)

you are having a laugh.Tried 4 different ones including the supposed super duper one from the peugout dealers next door, this was with the vagtool locking the crank pulley.

I had to do this when I received the stroker engine from Pisobiker, we locked the flywheel with a crow bar person either end, crank bolt was heated up and then buzzed off with air wrench

DJones did indeed make a very neat tool to lock the flywheel

You'll have to seach for it, I think it's in one of his threads. Basically it's a bracket that bolts in place of the starter motor and has a toothed secion that meshes with the flywheel.
