    Off-centred Crankshaft Pulley

I've broken 2 alternator belts and one pas belt in the space of 50 miles.
Obviously something was wrong so today decided to investigate....
Turns out the crank pulley is rotating off center, bit like a cam if you know what i mean?
It's not by much, maybe 2mm but i recon probably enough to stress a belt.
Been looking at the ETKA and it seams it comes in 2 pieces the damper and the belt pulley (ABY). Any one had any problems like this b4?
Started to remove the pulley today but broke the 1/4" extension on the 3rd bolt and need to drill the broken bit out of the socket It was getting cold and very windy so gave up for the day.

The centre piece of the pulley (damper) is actually two bits of metal bonded together with rubber. They can with age break up and fall apart. Short of it is you need a new one, for the work involved to change it you might as well do the timing belt while its apart. i.e. Belt, belt pulley, idler, water pump, and nuts/bolts.

Ye, I'd feared that was the case. That was my plan to to the timing belt while i was at it too.
Just looked at the price of the pulley on ETKA Looks like the car will be off the road for a bit, getting married on Saturday so funds are shall we say a bit limited

every s2 i have owned has had the crank pulley wobble. if you look at it and rev the engine you will see it runs true.
i once enquired about one from aelred and they were quite reasonably priced.
Cambelt was last done on your s2 at 53k miles.

any other mods you have done?

I had this problem once and it was the crank sprocket keyway had disintegrated and crank bolt was loose - very nearly killed the engine

Philip at Bassett Down Balancing refused to balance on of my cranks because it wobbled by 6 thou. I couldn't see ant wobble on my pulley with my eye, so 2mm sounds like a big wobble.
I would take the pulley off and get a DTI on the end of the crank to be sure. Then check the items mentioned above. Hopefully it's something simple like a loose bolt.

it will be the pully they all end up like that .you have to replace them or make one out of aluminium .
it went on my car and bent 10 inlet valves .

                    If 6 thou is a problem i'd guess 2mm (~80thou) is a fair issue
Hopefully i'll get a chance today to finish removing the pulley, think i'll see if i can borrow a DTI and check the crank for peace of mind.

Have you any any idea where to get an aluminium one from as the dealer price is stupid money?

                      TBH Andy it's quite bad.
I'll give Aelred a PM about a pulley, cheers for the heads up.
Not done too much to the car, only got back from work on Friday and been sorting out wedding stuff
Not even managed to get the car to run right yet

Just got the pulley off, there's a bit of play in the key way. That may be enough to off-centre the pulleys. Will try a new timing belt pulley first.
