    snub mount for new crossmember

Found a couple of hours today to get on with my big IC installation after removing the aux rad last weekend. I acquired the crossmember shown in the pic below which I think is one of those which s2_bo hade made up a couple of years back.

A problem I came across is that the XM won't fit properly due to the snub mount on the front of the engine. It fits ok if i take the rubber part off but don't really want to leave it like that. Ideally i think i need a rubber mount with a smaller diameter or a different bracket which would lower it by half an inch or so. Does anyone know of substitute parts I coud use? If anyone has fitted one of these XMs or similar and has any advice your help would be great.

Incidentally my car is an ABY coupe and has air con whch I'm happy to remove it if it makes a difference...

Ghetto but can you trim the bush?

I ran round the flare on the bush with a band saw and made it a cylinder when I started to make a tighter mount, could you just trim it to fit?

Yeah, could do that. Although was gonna fit one of the stiffer poly bushes so not sure. Might think about modifying the crossmember instead... :S

Hmm, I wander if there is a difference in the mount between 3B and ABY engines. My car is an ABY but has a 3B crossmember on it but my snum mount is miles from the crossmember. My thinking is that maybe your crossmember is made for a 3B. Maybe someone can tell you if I am talking cr@p or not! I hope this is the case as my snub mount being away from the cross member has cracked my downpipe at the turbo flange weld Easy fix if it is

you could try a mk1 golf one. not usre if its same size think a bit smaller. you can get a red poly one. easier to trim.

@ mudpugger yep think you are correct. My snub mount obviously fitted properly into the ABY crossmember, if you're using a 3B xm and it's miles away then I agree that would suggest the mount is in a different location on the different models. And that the crossmember i have is for a 3B. ****** (why you using a 3B xm anyway?)

I've ordered the mk1 golf poly bush and bracket and going to see if I can modify everything to make it fit. Failing that I see 034 motorsport do their own version of a crossmember so could order one of these. I'm guessing that would take a while to be shipped over from america tho so prob won't be ready for Aviemore next weekend. Incidentally my flatmates RS2 is going down to MRC this weekend so prob count us both out

Anyway thanks very much for your input!

My xm was damaged when I bought the car and i hadn't heard of this place and couldn't justify ÂŁ700 for an ABY one from Audi, so I got a 3B one off ebay and modded it to take my ABY IC.

Sad news about Aviemore... I hope I get some stainless welding wire in time to fix the DP. If not I'll just have to weld it up anyway.

                Wagner do an XM.

Re reading though, I made no sense. If your car is ABY then it shouldn't matter. If anything, the 3B would have to have the longer mount to make up the gap on mine. in which case your XM should fit.

My bracket does get really close to the power steering belt though, It makes me wander if it is the right bracket I have.

Sorry to hear that your having trouble fitting your XM.

In my first version of these which had an even smaller snub mount bracket i made my own mount by slicing open and wrapping silicone hose around the snub. I fixed it with a couple of zip ties and it worked perfectly.,

I suggest you try that before you buy a new cross member..

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Yeah, think i might have a go at making a mount, i do have some spare silicon hose lying around. Madpugger, it's not backward/forward movement I'm having trouble with, it's up/down i.e. the whole XM would have to sit higher so that the rubber bush would fit in it but it can't as the headlight mount brackets get in the way... I'll get it sorted soon I just need to be a bit more patient

Yes i do, but its at home and im in france atm so cant send you any, at least not for a month or so.
It work with the homemade silicone mount. I ran mine like that for about 2 years.
You cant really move it any higher as the bumper will not fit properly.

There is some pics on my large IC install thread.

                      Good luck..

                        Update

Almost got it all sorted now. The cup welded into the XM is cut from a mk1 golf bracket:

Almost there now, but really think I should get black hoses and the 2 pipes above the IC welded together lol :
