people hav GOT to start mentioning their full boost @ rpm @@@ which gear!!! it makes no sense when you are only stating rpms without mentioning the gear at which it is achieved.
In that case the Holset can get 2bar @ 3300rpm on Billmans car...
is that a stage 3 0.63 housing on the t04e 57 trim good for 500hp or so. thats probly the best slightly bigger than Rs2 all for £380 brand new. suppose a 50 trim would do it also.
lot of turbo for not a lot of cash.
mine has a stage 5 0.63. basically a t350. different wheels etc though
theres even more to it than that vas. a k24 may make say 1.5bar by 2.5k in 3rd. compressor flow is next into account. some turbos push massive air at low boost. these usually help larger capacity enginies though liek v8. IIRC the t04b cased turbo has that in mind.
excactly. also a bigger turbo may be able to produce much more hp on 1bar even if it gives high boost 500rpm later, and still give the same torgue with one that achieves the boost faster.
thats the flow levels that produce the hp. torque will be down though until the big unit is in efficiency range. 1 bar for instance on the k24 feels zippy 1 bar on the t04R feels like its still off boost.
the graphs show it. a big unit will be like a ski jump in reverse. a smller unit will be like a plateau hill. you could say everyday is about the area under the torque curve so small equals a nice wide torque curve. the big unit gives a lot more but up the RPM range so long as the engine can breath it. upto 7500 these units are ok.
whilst wondering about this the thing to take into account is can the engine work well up there. can i keep the egt's low enough with current flow and comression versus timing.
Strange my RS2 turbo has full boost at 1.7-1.8 bar at around 3200-3300 RPM, however it is controlled via eboost2 in dual port setup.
Edit: That is in 3rd and 4th gear.
Im usually doing this test with 3rd gear, sometimes with 4rd. What comes to comparing "kick to back" feeling and max boost time, I would say they are a little bit different. Max boost comes usually about 500rpm earlier than you really feel this torque.
when the boost sets in at it's highest, usually the advance is kept low to avoid knock. then it gradually rises to give more power. If for ex. you have 15deg of advance @3000 and 19deg on 3500rpm that a big difference and can be felt.

Well its an explanation what I have claimed (kick to the back comes ca 500rpm later than max boost). So when people are claiming that theirs RS2 turbo gives max boost at 3300rpm, then you can really feel it at ca 3800rpm.
depending on how the car is mapped. If a tuner has managed to find a way to give more advance sooner, then you could feel the kick sooner as well. One way of doing it is to increase acceleration enrichment so that as soon as you put your foot down, you get enough fuel so that it doesnt knock, and then have high advance sooner, and there you have it!Another way is to be on the rich side enough to compromise some of the power but at least have more advance again sooner.
I have around 15deg @3000rpm, 17deg@3500 and 19deg@4000rpm @ 280kpa(1.8bar) and it feels like pulling from 3400rpm.(but with 3071R turbo)
