    Questions regarding homefries

    Hello All

I have recently joined this web site as i am now a very happy owner of standard 3b. The engine has 136k on it but has full service history and pulls very well indeed. Almost as quick as a standard s4 i had a few years ago.

However, as you do, the fever off wanting more power is kicking in once again. All good!!

First thing i did when i bought the car was to install a centre mount boost gauge to check if i was running standard boost or not. Bought one from auto gauge which i believe is not the best or most accurate make, however the boost consistantly peaks @ 0.75 bar when on full boost in 4th or 5th. As far as i read 0.8 bar is standard so not sure is the loss of 0.5 bar down to the cheap gauge or maybe a slight leak in the system somewhere? Not to worried as the car goes like it should with nothing untoward heard from under the bonnet when boosting.

Am i right in thinking someone remaps ecu's on here and this is called (homefries)?

If so how to i get in touch with this person?
    How much will this cost?
    What gains can i expect?
And am i right in saying that a 3 bar MAP sensor needs to get fitted to the ecu at the same time?

At the moment my car has a standard exhaust but will soon be getting a custom stainless made with the cats removed. I can get an mot sorted without so why not eh.

Look forward to hearing from you guys.

    Regards

    Gordon

There isn't a homefry for the 3B at the moment although I believe they are close, S2central can advise.

You would go to a company called MRC tuning who can do a generic or real time map on your car.

You should get the mapping done after you've done all your other mods to get the best out of it.

Oh my mistake mate. Must have picked up the info wrong. Dam! Was hoping it would be relatively straight forward to send my ecu to however was in the know. Whats the reason a 3b cant be homefried and an aby can? Is it a recent development or something?

Was looking at these other tuning companies but very expensive.

Any ideas where it can be done cheaper?

Ill check out s2 central for more info though.

      Cheers

Paul does now have a homefry for the 3B as I am running it in mine with switch on dash to select standard boost of around 0.75bar or upto 1.4 bar boost in performance mode. Paul Nugent knows his stuff and will no doubt leave a comment on here soon..

          Hi Gordon

Good to see another S2 owner up this neck of the woods ....You will be amazed at the difference when you go from standard to remap ecu....would advice you buying samco/roose boost hoses for the car due to higher boost levels

If you are ever about crieff should give us a shout as I could you a spin in MRC chip 3b

Nice one. Good news i must admit!!

Ill try to find this lad and get something sorted. Does the ecu get this higher rated MAP or is it MAF sensor fitted at the same time?

Also what price will this cost?

            Cheers mate

              Alrighty

              How goes it?

Never bn to crieff but may very well take a spin through to see what its all about. Thanks for the invite to sample MRC power, ill take you up on ur offer if im passing through one day.

How do you find the gearing on ur 3B? I find its quite long geared and the engine labours a bit when city driving. I had a 2.3 10v before and was much better to drive round the town at slow speeds. Cant have everything i guess! I wonder if the 6 speed version solves this lumpiness at slow city driving?

              Cheers

A few people go with the 6 speed but a good bit of work involved changing it over ..I am quite happy to stick with longer gearing as great for twisty country roads round here....

Like I said if you are passing or fancy a spin up give us a shout will show you the different set ups

From what I understand ..you can get away with changing fuel and boost chips to take you to 1.3bar on the 2.0map sensor ...no messing about with anything else outside the ECU required ,this can take you to 280bhp

MRC will do a generic re-map for £250 if you can't make it down to Banbury for a custom jobby.

Thanks for the info mate, i was thinking it was goin to cost around 600 of my finest bucks to get a remap. Thats how much i payed for my s4 a few years ago. Cool cool i'll check that out right now then.

                          Thanks mucker!

Just checked out the mrc website and they quote £550 for a remap. Maybe im looking in the wrong place, where did you get the figure of £250 from.

Contact MRC directly if you go that route or speak to s2central.net as mentioned above.

You can run a lot of mods on a homefries as I've proved, sure you don't get 100% of what the car is capable of but then it doesn't cost a fortune either as you don't need the map tweaking each time you upgrade here and there. Different turbo, injectors, MAF all need a proper remap though.

Get it sorted and enjoy Next upgrade should be a modified inlet, RS2 or ABY airbox followed by a 3" exhaust and larger bore downpipe, should see 280+bhp and you'll be amazed at how strong the car goes over stock
