Oil burning like hell now :(

Since Billing my car has developed a rather nasty habit of burning loads of oil. Those of you who have been in my car may have noticed an odd noise coming from the turbo. It would appear that the turbo seals have gone.

After leaving the car for several hours ie overnight or whilst at work, huge clouds of blue smoke emerge from the tailpipe.

I have had a go on the shaft but doesnt feel too bad. It shouldnt be the VS oil seals cos i have done then about 10k ago.

Now I know Im not exactly user freindly when it comes to the car and it does take a good caning, but the turbo has only been on the car 18months now. The bottom end wouldnt cause this type of problem, so it must be the blower. Its gonna have to go off the road for the turbo to be inspected. I know I have over spun it a few times, due to boost leaks. Are they really that delicate???

That noise wasn't right - and the hesitation on boost felt worrying. At least you have got an excuse to get the turbo modified while it is off the car.

Tom, I found (on a Metro Turbo the ex had) that if the oil seals have gone then the inside of the turbo will be very oily. I don't know the orientation of the turbo on an S2. The Metro had a Garret T3 ( far to big for a 1.3!)

The other option have you got some form of crankcase evacuation system which might be a taking too much oil vapour out?

My favourite is the turbo though. Can you get a new set of seals from BTN or someone like that? A rebuild wouldn't do it any harm.

Well the inlet piping is oily due to the wear in the rings, but it nevr used to smoke on start up and the rings wont cause that. I too think its the turbo, but just wanted others opinions.

@Doug, time for different spec blower!! But dont want the same as yours, too much lag for me. It will be 26/27 #8 with 27 sport turbine in the coldside.

I found once they started smoking on start up they smoked when running. I will have a think.

Mind you, you know you want a new turbo....

A new turbo can't do any harm, apart from to the bank balance and to the fuel consumption and the rods.....

Your car sounded very odd when you were behind us coming out of billing, similar to a machine gun.Is that noise from the wastgate exhaust pipe?

It sounds like a machine gun that is broken - or more like the pod racers in Star Wars (Becky's description).

No offence Tom - but it sounds ***** ! You need to tune that pipe a bit.

LOL, yeah, i think it will sound different once the running problem is sorted. Gonna do a compression test today to see how bad the rings are.

Right then, did the compression check today. Cyls1,2,3,5 11.5 bar............ cyl 4 8.5 bar

Something is not right. So after work today I have taken the engine out and started to strip it down. Removed the head and the bore looks fine. The valves dont look too bad either put I havent stripped it down yet. Next job is to order all the parts and rebuild it.

Im still unsure which conrods to use :s

Im toying with Eurospecs or Pauters or Arrow.

Tom - Sal is interested in rods as well - you could try and get a discount on whatever rods you go for.

The Eusorpecs sound like a pile of crap.

The Pauters were going to cost me $989. You have to make sure they have them in stock as I waited months and still never got them.

Arrow only have 11 rods left in stock after I got mine - £720 + £10 + Vat (this was me getting a 10% discount)

Kin right, I know I am biased because I am using a Garrett hybrid, but that GT30R sounds the dogs nuts, and if I wasnt so skint/in debt I'd order one up tomorrow, assuming you can get one to fit the Audi manifold flange.

'The housing is designed with T3 inlet flanges and a 4-bolt outlet.' according to the Garrett book so it should be fine. In saying that - has anyone priced a GT30R yet - I'm afraid too just the case it puts me off the idea for life
