I’m sure I’ve seen reference to this but can seem to find anything definitive. I’ve had a few scary instances with the S2 stuck in traffic when it’s very nearly overheated.
The fan initially kicks in a couple of notched above the 90 mark. However I’ve noticed in bad, inching traffic, where the car is really getting hot, it seems to pass the point where the fan is “told” to kick in. The result is the temperature has just kept rising with no high speed fan action to help. Not good at all!
Part of the problem could be down to the fact that when I changed the old Nissen rad to a Behr unit I also used a neater ABY fan in my 3b. The 3b has an extra 12v feed having a 3 way plug connector. I joined the two 12v’s to connect to the pos & neg terminals of the unit. Generally it works fine. But in certain situation it doesn’t seem to be enough.
I think I need an ABY relay plate – the ones that live somewhere down behind the passenger headlight area - but haven’t had any luck finding one so far. I’ve also found that when I replaced one of the missing fan fuses the fan just runs constantly at high speed – so Ive had leave it out!.
Other that sorting these issues, my solution for greater peace of mind would be a switch to give manual, on demand fan operation. Could ideally add a switch to the dash rail (like for fog lights etc). With control over the running and duration of the fan I should avoid the panic of last night when I thought I was going to have to pull over and let the car cool down on the grass verge.
Anyone BTDT?? Or got any wiring diagrams!
Cheers
Paul

. That was done on typ85, so on S2 or B3 you will need other schematics, however principle stays the same.
