2.8 V6 engine, what can you tell me?

I know it's not S2 but I figure someone on here must know about them!

I picked up a 1992 2.8 V6 quattro coupe and it's so disappointing in the power department. Now this could just be because I'm used to the same 170bhp but in a 1ton car, or that I'm used to 4 valves per cylinder (and very revvy) and 2 wheel drive not 2 valves 4wheels but it really is pretty crappy!

Is there anything cost effective I can do to this engine to liven it up a bit? What kind of fuel/spark system does it use? Would the system lend itself to a supercharger without £1000's being spent? What else can you tell me about it?

    Cheers!

I'd start by giving it a proper service, plugs, air-filter, fuel-filter, oil/filter ect ect. It's never going to be earth shatteringly fast but should feel nice and torquey.

its a lazier engine as such but shoudl be revvy unless you have a problem with the second short runner which should give a notable lift in power at 4200rpm.
The power delivery is very linear but they do suffer from restrictive breathing.
Bore up throttle body (very restricted) RAM air, silicone hoses from TB to MAF. The later 3" MAF makes a difference too over the earlier 2.5. If you can remove the screen from that too it will sharpen up the throttle response. And a freer flowing exhaust pref with a decate will make the engine respond quicker. It is a lazier lump and pretty torquey, I had one for 3 years and as an all rounder i loved it. Hassle free as well. H
Hugely over engineered engine and capable of galactic miles, I know of a small few over 500k (miles). The ported up throttle body alone makes a huge difference to the throttle response.

            You can go nuts;

Fast28 on Audifans is currently running a 2.8 30v engine with a PES charger circa 300bhp and torque from idle. But he did do a SC conversion himself and one fo the few who has suceeded in making it work.
Actually the latter 2.8 30v engine with the breahting opened up will see 220bhp without a lot of effort. Fast28's AAH before the SC achieved 0-60 in 6 seconds dead at GTI international, which is a good improvement over standard.

As with all things how much are you willing to throw at it?

I used to have a green 2.8q coupe reg K580 GAU, they are never going to set the world on fire but once you wind up the big lazy V6 they are quick enough to have plenty of fun

IMHO not so much a performance machine but a great looking comfy cruiser with plenty of grip and character and a beautiful sound track

This is the kind of reply I like to see, some suggestions at last! People have just been telling me its a big fat lazy engine, not what to do about it

I'm not willing to put much coin into it, with my Golf for example I bought a donor B3 80, put the 6a into the Golf then put bike carbs on it and came out £150 in profit for the pleasure Now I'm putting 2 16v's in it and it's cost me £14, so yea, pretty much a budget of zero, hence "cost effective"! I don't really wanna pour money into an engine like this for little reward, it'd be more sensible to do an engine swap... If there's a few bits I can do to perk it up though that'd be ace, will look into breathing mods

Can I just stick different heads on it and make it 30v? Do they just bolt straight up? 12v just doesn't cut it! There's certainly no power spike at 4200, it's out of puff like an asthmatic smoker running a sprint at that point!

Reasonable ECU chip available from this vendor.
                      http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AUDI-80-B4-100...item3a55cf4e55

Send email and ask a specific chip for your V6 and tell the engine code AND the ecu sticker code.

I bought a 2.8 Liter v6 Quattro 1992 last week from Germany. It is close to S2 Sedan but lacks the power, but pulls very strong in 5th gear from 1500. I will try with chip and better CATs. Old cat internals are loose & rattling and do not pass the engine test any more on idle. I plan to install good flowing 200 celler Cats. Here some performance cat vendor links.

General 200 celler search (beware the 98mm or 120mm small ones...)

Very skeptical on the 2.8chipping. The hitachi ECU wasnt gear up for it and vfew have actually cracked it. The chipping has never proved that great as ultimately all its going to do its overfuel, if you went for cams then it woudl make more of a difference.

034motorsport this year finally did a chipset for the AAH.
http://www.034motorsport.com/product...ducts_id=17549 bwhich works with the big bore MAF. The later cars after mid 93 have the 3" MAF already. They have the part number ending 471A.

Read Fast28's thread all the way through, the 30v is a pretty different lump. all the looms are different, ECU the whole lot. the 2.8 also sounds properly throaty.

The 2.8 is a great car, but if you want a road rocket be prepared to throw a lot of money at it as very little is available. there is a bit more info in the USA on it as they never had the S2 so the 2.8 was top of the line but With a P&P job, decat and breathing modification a few make a little over 200bhp. Its not a lot but its a nice linear delivery. It shares very little with the VW VR6 lump which is much peppier and a shallower Vee.

However as a daily driver I served me very well, can cruise and peg it back if you want to have fun. i still think they are underrated, BUT you have to accept what it is.

If your after a daft transplant the 3.7/4.2 V8 by all accounts isnt that different.

... and and it is well known, that free aspirating tuning is waste of money. As a daily turbo driver I was tempted to test it..... I will only tune it for fuel economy...

                          It Will be

Is the 2.8 liter AAH early series V6 hitachi ECU "similar" to Coupe 2.0L NM engined 20V Hitachi ECU ?

I googled this one around Fast28

why not just simply.... SUPERCHARGE it? Buy a centrifugal supercharger used on the 12V VR6's, a small water-to-air intercooler, bigger injectors maybe somebody here could sell the stock 3b\aby\aan injectors, 0.9 bar of boost... and you have a beast of engine! (Obviously mapping well the ecu) And someday later upgrade the exh with tubular equal lenght runners and a twin 2,5" pipery! I would do it ^^

If they respond well to breathing mods it's either gotta be forced induction or bike carbs again, but I'd kinda like to keep the reliability so perhaps not carbs

Not keen on chipping, as said it's only going to alter what's already there so no massive rewards to be had...
