@Epic - if in the opening post you had explained some more history then I would have understood it better. I have missed the history on this one cos I've had sporadic access over the past few months. Like Gazza I am a bit confused that no issues were found during run-in period... I dunno how on earth you drove it for ~1000 miles without applying any boost. I am of course not trying to dispute the information in the engineers report but if the rings had not sealed within 1000 miles then they never will... just don't understand how it wasn't 'slappy' or 'fumey' being tootled about before a mapping session.

Tis a very unfortunate situation for you though.

Did you check the fuelling when you were running this engine in ?

If its been mega rich its going to of washed the bores and that may be the cause, another fault although uncommon is a broken ring.

All of these would of shown up when running it in though as it would of been smoking and to be fair you should not spend 1000 miles running a engine in with no boost, it needs loading up, sitting at 70mph doing laps of the M25 again won't do it any favours as a engine I built for someone had issues after he kept it at one rpm for as long as possible without actually loading it up.

I can't believe a fault like that hasn't shown up prior to being setup tbh but either way as already said its a crap situation for you to be in as you didn't directly buy the engine from Aelred ? so its not really his responsibility to sort any issues out.

i still dont understand how an engine can be run in over such a loing distance. yes its iron but even so. id want to be loadin gthe rings within 20 miles or so of start. max.

1k no boost or load is polished bores not seated rings

also oi dont understand how an engine can be run in on not the correct map. i dont belive on runnig in maps or any of that tosh. only real maps, maybe not fully boost tuned. the old map aint a runnnig in map thats for sure.

I think this is a very unfair thread.

Epic if you have a Axe to grind dont do it here. I stand by Aelred.

I am opening this thread again so that Aelred has a clear, open opportunity to reply in a timely manner so that we have both sides to this discussion.

Meantime, I must ask all other folk to only post messages in this thread that are helpful in some way. If this thread gets out of control and/or unfairly biased in any way, then it will have to be closed.

Neither me or the moderators have any personal involvement on this - hence the desire for an open, honest discussion between adults is required !

                .

                Trying to be neutral here...

Aelred does have to sub-contract out a lot of the maching work...he does not have his own dedicated fully set up machine shop...so that does leave him at the mercy of his suppliers.

As a engine builder who is charging for his work you have to check these things and not go off someones word that its measured correctly.

TBH I doubt Aelred would take those sort of risks with the reputation he has.

nothing i said was blaming anybody. just personal opinion and fact. why is it an unfair thread?

most people come to the forum from desperation rather than the first hearing.

epic has had his say and like he said its a forum for public. if we cant talk about it delete the thread.

this thread should be empty then as nobody can really help, only comment.

not having a dig at mods here. just saying how it is. i understand your cautious nature to such posts and respect that.

                        Error404:
The bottom end was supplied by Aelred to Alex S2Pearl fully assembled. I don't know if he does the machining work himself or contracts it out.

                        S2central.net:
There is no public history on this engine since I bought it from Alex in late spring last year.
I had hoped to resolve the issues with Aelred privately away from the Forum.
There was no slappy noise from the engine during the run in period and MRC found nothing wrong with it before they started the mapping session.

Yes this was the engine that was in my car when you saw it.

I presumed that the work that Aelred had done or had done would have been correctly done exactly because of his reputation here on this Forum

feel bad for ya...ive been stitched up so many times its untrue. Kind of grown a thick skin now sadly.
Has s2pearl been given the report, I would be speaking to him seeing as thats who you bought the engine off. Looking at it from both sides of the fence, i wouldnt want to refund someone when i dont know what they had done to the engine, but....you have got a report that makes it obvious that its not abuse that has put this engine in this state (assuming all statements correct). Make him aware of your intentions and if no joy get the ball rolling on a claim.
Someone is liable here a hell of a mess...but someone is.
If you stick it out...you should get a return eventually...whether the seller is kind hearted or not. Could be completeley innocent but maybe not, I dont know. Never met the guy but that statement above about "pies and lids" is where my money is. If theres a lid i'll ****in remove it!

To clearfiy, the engine was run in on spring boost (mechanical) only.

I've been informed due to the nature of the piston design one is unlikely to diagnose piston slap as it can be mistaken for small end bearing wear which is difficult to pinpoint as it can be mistaken for valvetrain noise.

Here is a selection of pictures from report

cant comment on most but i had similar bore wear on a 16v i had bored for 83mm wiseco's and had to have one bore sleeved.

didn't look much or feel much but its was too much for the bore.

is that pitting i can see on the head picture on the flat area at the bottom.

Have to agree with Quattrofever on this one, its my opinion that its the sellers responsibility to deliver as advertised to i would speak to s2pearl, then its up to him to go to Aelred. i had the same issue with a 3b engine i bought, had a blown turbo that was discovered by the next owner but i paid for a replacement then i was a bit stumped as i no longer had the previous sellers details so was left out of pocket.
either way i think it is sellers responsibility. hope this gets resolved soon.
