    S2 / RS2 Intercoolers

    Hey Folks!!

Can anyone help me out with some info as to the differences between these two intercoolers and whether an RS2 I/C will fit in a standard S2 coupe??

    Thanks in advance!

Need to slightly modify the mounting on an S2 to make the RS2 cooler fit, but will def fit.

Difference is that its bit larger. this has been covered before, there is a pic showing the 2 side by side to compare size difference etc too.

Believe the RS2 item is 30% larger than the S2 cooler, could be wrong there, but thats the number that rings a bell in my head... altho am v tired at the mo

Try using the search feature and you should find lots more info here

Also its worth noting that the 3B IC is smaller than the ABY IC also.

If fitting an RS2 IC onto 3B you have to be a little more creative and modify your mounting bracket a bit more for it to fit right.

You could always get an RS2 crossmember to save you the bother of modding your existing one, but at £800ish its a bit on the steep side!

          Thanks folks!!

It's for an ABY so can anyone give details of how much modification is needed?? I don't really want to go down the expensive crossmember path.

          Cheers!

It just needs a small bracket welding on, or bolting on.

There are pics etc in this section, as above, if you use search for RS2 intercooler you should find them all and just need to have a little hunt.

I think Greg has posted the comparison pics and the fitting pics.

what i did was angle grind the old bracket off, lined the new IC up and then welded a bit of metal to the piece i cut off. put a twist in it and welded that back onto the x member so the IC uses the OE sliding bolts.

The job took about 1hr inc removing and re fitting the bumper.

I did the same job at Greg's Dad's garage, but it took slightly longer than 1 hour. Approximately 4 hours longer! Mainly due to a seriously bad fitting hose clip which eventually fell off on the way home!

If I was doing it again, it would probably take 1 or 2 hours.

Easiest way is like Greg says - angle grind the old bracket off at the crossmember, bolt it back onto the RS2 intercooler, get someone to hold it in place, leave 10mm clearance from the pulley behind it, spot weld the bracket onto the intercooler again, make sure all is straight and lines up (10mm clearance from the pulley don't sound a lot, but any more and you have problems putting bumper on) and weld rest of bracket on, taking care not to burn a hole through the crossmember. Then just paint to stop it rusting and get some hoses sorted out - the standard hose will go on, but it may well kink, and appear to strangle the car. It doesn't but when you look at it you wince.

Thanks to Doug for showing me how the turbo coldside turns (easy, really!) and have no boost leaks/kinks in pipe any more!

If you want photos, yell, but if you have a welder, an axle grinder, and a spare pair of hands, it's not hard.
