    Appropriate EGTemperature

Just got my EGT gauge installed, with the sensor in the downpipe. I´m now wondering what the recommended max temperature at WOT is? The sensor is placed after the turbo (about 10 cm from the turbine)?

I know that with the sensor in the manifold a temperature of about 950 is okey. It should not rise above 1000 degrees celcius.

Made one short test late yesterday night and got about 600 degrees at WOT (only one test though). Idle temperture was about 400 degrees.

The car is running a bit rich that could probably lower the temperature as well.

if it goes over 800 degreesc C you are starting to run too hot. 750 on prolonged WOT is a good max temp to run at - I think I am running about 750deg C on WOT.

Pure laziness Just got the car togheter and I have only driven about 3000 km in 1,5 years.... so now I want to put some mileage one the car The sensor will be moved when the engine needs a rehaul or repairs that require removal of the manifold.

850 is the upper limit you would want to see after the turbine. I don't think it would be wise to run this sort of temp for prolonged periods of running. This will be somewhere in the region of 950 before the turbine. If you go much higher than this, something will melt

it tepends on what type of turbo he has ... for a stock turbo i would say 100 C for a big K27 150 C. But the purpose of egt is to monitor the engine temp ... not estimate ...

EGT meter should not be before the turbo as they break up and you don't want a thermocouple going through the blades. It is common for turbo cars to have them after the turbo and 100deg C drop through the turbo is a common figure used.

I agree, Greg had one break off pre-turbo. Luckily it went throught the wastegate!

Personally after spending over £1000 on a race spec'd K27 i dont want to risk damaging it. I will be fitting EGT gauge AFTER turbo into the downpipe. Max reading should be 850 anymore and kiss goodbye to the turbo. IMHO.

When mine was running lean after curing a boost leak temps after turbo increased to 900 before I backed off (as advisd by Mihnea).

Basically, if you work on circa 100 deg less after the turbo then thats close enough. ITs not ideal, but its safer.

Come on Albert - give the guys some slack - it is MUCH simpler to install the EGT after the turbo. Sure in an ideal world it would be in front of the turbo, but the 100 degree guidline is good enough in this regard. EGT of 850 celsius after the turbo is sufficiently safe and accurate in my opinion. The additional accuracy of measuring EGT before the turbo in a road car does not warrant the risk of causing catastrophic damage to an expensive turbo in the event of the temperature probe breaking off... In MY opinion - and seemingly some of the other guys here as well.

How about mounting the probe at the entrance to the wastegate? That way if it does break off, there is a better chance it will exit thru the wastegate instead of the turbo?
