  • Ignition Issues

    Hello,
Not been on here much lately, due to house move and no internet yet.

My S2 seams to have some ignition issues, After its been stood for a while it wont start properly.

It does fire up just, but sounds like its only running on 2 or 3 cylinders, theres plenty of black smoke and unburnt fuel coming out the exhaust and it the throttle is closed it stalls straight away.

I have never replaced the POS or coil (3b engine) so maybe thats the issue.

Testing spark at the plugs ends is temperamental.

It also seams that when it does run for a while and gets warm everything is fine.

This only happens if the car is left for about a month.
    Anyone else experienced this?

Has this happened to someone else?

Check condish of the rotor too

3b coil has an external pos unit but is not pin compatible with aby adu setup

do a quick impedance check on coil primary and secondary

alternatively good be a bad earth

I removed the POS units and fitted these 'Red Top' coil over pack. Excellent results. Best modification I ever did. Smoother, reved quicker and never missed a beat.

plugs are Bosch platinum, leads are magnecore KV85's, dissy is about 5 years old in ok condition but the cap is new.

Could be a bad earth. I'll investigate that, would it be on the wiring from the coil and pos?

How do I check the coil primary and secondary? I'll have a look on s2central when I get to the Internet. (on the phone atm)

            Thanks for the help.

              .

              Sounds like a water/damp issue to me...leads/cap/rotor...

Might just need a good blast to warm and dry everything out, try that first.

              Carlos.

I have 5 POS's and coils here if you want to try one Bo.
It's a shame I don't have a working 3B for you to try your coil on.

                      Cheers guys.
Haven't got any time to come and borrow one Stu but thanks for the offer.

Has anyone else got a pos and coil I could borrow to see if it sorts it out?

                        Some results today finally.

I tried a few different coils but it wasn't till i changed the spark plugs that the car sprang to life again.

When testing the sparks in some of the plugs the spark seamed to be jumping further up inside the recess of the plug and not at the gap.

I tried a new set and its now running fine with the maf unplugged.

As soon as the maf is plugged in the engine cuts out so it must be another dead one.. The Maf is pressure side mounted and fitted in to a 3" alloy maf body.
I will have to get another MAF to dismantle and place in to the body. I think its maybe the soldering that kills them as this is the second one thats died for no apparent reason...
