  • Radiator fan running constantly (S2 -93)

    Hi,

The problem I have is that the radiator fan starts to run constantly when I connect the battery. I have tried to disconnect the sensor for coolant temp in the bottom of the radiator. Also have disconnect the two sensors underneath the intake manifold. Without result.

The only way to stop the fan without disconnecting battery is to remove the relay that I have marked on the pictures. The relay is getting constant voltage from somewhere, you can feel that its turns on when mounting it back so the relay is not stuck.

The car have been standing a long time without battery. Worked fine before.

Any ideas or hint on how to proceed are were welcome.

    Best regards,
    Johan Andersson

Looks like an early ABY judging by the fusebox - a Coupe I presume... Give me some time to look at schematics - the radiator wiring is shyte on these cars.

Be careful with bared terminals on the two spades at that thermoswitch - that is 12V on there and it isnt always fused !!!

Sorry for the lack of information. Our presume is correct

      It´s a Coupé.
      Early ABY

I noticed today that there is 12V on the two spades as it touched the earth and made some sparks. If they are fused is there a possibility to see witch fuse number, just to be sure that the fuse didn't burn during the sparks?

      Kind regards,

OK -looked at wiring... a couple of failure scenarios here to test out.

1 - Relay 3 is faulty and stuck ON... Try swapping in Relay 11 instead and see if you have same issue. You can also use a meter to buzz across terminals 30 and 87 on the relay - it should be open circuit.

2 - The afterrun relay (position 14 and number 324 in the wiring panel above drivers pedals) could be faulty - also stuck on (regardless of thermoswitch) and activating main relay #3. You can buzz terminals 31 and 87a to find out.

            Cheers,

You say 2 but you mean 14 really...

                  See page 11 - http://www.s2central.net/S2_Schemati...tic_Primer.pdf - odd numbering is Herr Audi's doing - not mine !!!

Senario #1: I changed relay 3 with relay 11, still the same. I also measured between terminal 30 and 87, shows no sign of connection. So I think this relay can be removed from list of possible fault reasons.

Senario #2: When I remove relay on position 14 in the wiring panel above drivers pedals the fan stops. I tried to buzz terminal 31 and 87a the multimeter show 1.2k Ohm. Strange value I thought so I taken it apart to find that its full with electronic and no coil as in relays I'm use to. So I guess this might be a reason for problem?

Any ideas on how to proceed are welcome.

Thanks for your effort to help me out,

Assume you get 1.2k when relay is in you hand. But I presume when relay is plugged into 12v that it closes that switch. I would be confident that relay is at fault alright by sounds of things.

Yes, 1.2k Ohm when I have the relay in my hand. Tomorrow I will measure the relay socket to be sure that I don´t have a signal from the sensor even do it´s unplugged (broken wires or something like that). If the socket looks nice I order a new relay and try with that.

                        Thanks once again

                          Problem solved

                          Hi,

I bought a new relay 14/control unit. And that solved the problem. Pretty expencive 73€ but as it works now I´m happy.

Many tanks for all the advise and help =)

I have same sort of problem. Cooling fan start to run at first speed if ambient temperature goes below ~+10C. Over +10c temperatures it works like it should be-> when a/c is switched on. When i take out relay nr.217 from fuseboks, fan stops. In a winter time i keep that realy disconnected, and summer time connected. Any ideas?

edit: It also stops when i turn of airflow from a/c controlpanel.
