Is it possible that the ECU itself is kaput?

Has the car been fitted with an aftermarket alarm system at anytime in its life, i have even known partially removed systems on jags cause all kinds of strange problems!

The blinkcodes will tell us if the ECU has trouble with the hall or cam sensor. You could also check the wiring from the ECU plug to the sensors. Information about the pin-out is found on Pauls famous pages http://www.s2central.net/motronic_04.html

You need to check your inductive sensors on the flywheel

One sensor allows the fuel pump to run (Ring Gear Sensor)
The other gives crank position for injectors and coils (Pin Sensor)

physically swap them over in there holes and swap the plugs over so they are doing the other ones job. then crank, if the fuel pump relay comes in still (presuming it was coming in before the swap) the sensors are fine if not the one now reading the flywheel ring gear is kaput.
