My S2 has fallen out with me

I haven't used the s2 for about a week as I bought an A6 TDI quattro last week and have been using it. Went to go down to the shops today and decided to take the S2 for the run. Well, it's fallen out with me for driving the A6 and isnt running right, sounds like it is off a cyl. A light came on on the dash and it beeped once I'd driven a couple of hundred yards then went off and the car was running lumpy.

The light looked like a big brake warning light. Oh well, just something else to add to the list of things that needs fixed about here.

I suspect it could be a coil pack but haven't investigated yet.

I have used this car daily for 6 months with no problems, leave it a week and it's fecked.

Brake / bomb warning light is maybe related to drop in pressure over the week - fairly common for a tired old bomb but nothing to greatly worry about.

Misfire could be something nasty or just something as silly as loose plug or cracked HT boot. See if you can pull codes - they might point to something else entirely (like bad MAF or TPS connections for example).

Yes, pulling the codes presents a slight problem as I dont have anything to pull them with.

I went out there and pulled the injector leads off one by one to see if it made any difference, cyl 1 seems to be the problem as the engine tone doesnt change when pulled. The rest make a difference.

Can you swap the coil packs to see if the problem follows it or stays with the cyl?

I need VAG-COM, I have the freeware and cheap lead but I just cant get it to connect. I need it to check out the diesel pump setup on my A6 too.

As Paul said check the plugs are tight, possibly a nice and quick fix.

You can't change the coilpack over easily, but you swap the POS Power Output Stage on the bulk head, there are two of them with three channels each. Search for POS for more info.

If you have not had the coilpack cover off already, I would suggest you do it soon and check the plug boots and plugs. I had a missfire with loose plug before... If that lets go you are in a whole world of pain...

          Cheers,

          Steve.

BLINK codes matey - all you need is a 12V lamp / LED and a jumper wire...

As suggested earlier - swap the POS over and see if 'dead' cyl moves to #4

OK, I got fed up not being able to talk to my cars so I bought a genuine ross tech kit (I need to do the diesel oump timing on my A6 anyway)

Scanned the s2 there and came up with this:

as it's on all 5 cyls I dont know its causing this proble, but what could be causing the error anyways? I haven't hada chance to check plugs etc yet btw.

They will be logged from post 3 above, clear all codes and check again.

                  DOH!

Good point, of course they will.

I shouldn't be let out near a car

cleared them, no codes now, I guess this must be something mechanical then.

As above, swap the POS units around and see does the missfire move cylinder. You dont need to remove them to swap the cables over, but make sure you swap both the input and output cables from each POS unit.

I was away all weekend so I'm ony getting looking at this tonight. I swapped over the POS units and right enough, the dead cyl moved to no. 4 (before I go any further I dont know how no.1 cyl is determined on this engine so when I say No.1, I mean the one at flywheel end).

Looks like I need a POS unit then and I suppose Audi would be about a million and seventy twelve pounds.

                        Anyone got a used one?

there is a thread about how you can bodge the things too work by changing the wires over if only one packs in.. I think. although if you can get a cheap one you might as well.

Yes, I saw that, one of mine is a genuine one and one is off a V6, it is the V6 one that has failed, not sure if it's just coincidence, although it has just been mounted with 1 screw.

It sounds like cylinder 4 or 5 has failed (no5 is closest to the flywheel btw), it will be the POS with the least wires going into it, running no4 and 5. as opposed to the other which is running 1, 2 and 3).
