    Wastegate cap screw - superchips??

Say you looked at an RS2, and the wastegate cap had a stud screwed into the top - the stud had a wire threaded through the middle that was then tied round the nipple, presumably to stop it being turned any further - would it be fair to expect the car has been superchipped? WGFV still plugged in, and not sure if the ECU had been tampered with...

Just wondering if anyone else has seen this method of tuning - would it be fair to factor in having to replace the WG cap and check out the ECU (and possibly get new stock chips in the event it's been tampered wth)? Or would you walk away?

Would be interested to know what others think!

Says to me it has been tuned by somebody less than ideal. I know a good tuner can raise the mechanical boost and remap accordingly but unless you know who did it and what they did i wouldnt trust it. Wouldn't put me off buying the car, as long as the engine is healthy and drives good i would still buy the car and revert the wastegate back to stock and replace the chips with something you know and trust.

Why as soon as anyone sees anything other than the 'norm' on a tuned car Superchips is blamed?

There were and are any number of other tuners doing these cars now, and then.
I'm not saying they are ideal but at the time these cars were new who else was doing them? and where else would owners turn to get more power.

If you are able to take a picture I may be able to identify if it is Superchips work or not, and no, I don't work there.

I don't think this thread has "blamed superchips". If you read my question I've specifically asked if it's fair to assume this as the work of superchips, or if anyone else tunes via this method. I've not made this assumption at all.

I've seen pictures of superchips work, effectively a threaded stud sticking about half an inch out the top the WG with the WGFV unplugged. This was different - in that the stud had a hole drilled through it, and a wire threaded through, twisted and tagged onto the WG top chamber nipple, effectively an 'anti-tamper' device. it was heavily corroded and looked like it had been there a while... unfortunately I didn't snap a picture at the time.

I think Mark's comment is fair point, it's covered 140k and not self destructed but worth reverting to stock and getting it done by a known source for peace-of-mind. The thing had typical 'nothing-until-3.5k-and-then-back-in-the-seat-till-7k' RS2 acceleration, just wish i could have seen the boost. Perhaps the bigger issue would be the on-boost hesitation, likely the original coil packs causing that!

            Sorry, you are absolutly correct

Although i don't work there and wouldn't have my car done there, I can admit that I was there for a little over 4 years.

I learnt a lot there having been at BBR for four years before that. I left thouroughly jaded about the whole tuning industry and never had any car I owned tuned while there (speaks volumes) but they did, and still do a LOT of good work for many thousands of happy customers.

            Anyway - back on topic

The lock wire is to stop the screw adjusting itself, as the wastegate opens and closes and the spring gets compressed, the spring perch rotates and can turn the adjuster screw. I made one of these bolts for a UR once as its easier to lock it off than the stock allen screw.
