    What was that ?

    Got my car from local rally mechanics today. Well "You will need full head/block repair". Not very optimistic.

    So I have few questions before I decide anything.

    1) What should be perfect/normal compresion in our cilinders ? I got :

    1-11,4
    2-11
    3-9,3
    4-10,2
    5-11,5

    Oil Smoke is like hell from exhaust , not a turbo(checked that) , no oil in INTAKE tubes.

    2) Car shut down while driving when pressing clutch pedal or braking even on low RPMS. Battery is low recently , could it couse that ?

    3) What was the list of parts required for installing new block and head(the come with pistons and valves) ?

    4) What to do with the SuperChip nut fitted , how turn it to original s2 settings ?

    5) Would be great to hearn Nm settings for bolts and head. Link to different thread is also welcome.

    P.S. been quoted 500quid just for the work !!! They don't know how much for the parts yet !!! Stealers !!!

    P.S.S. They offered to balance the crankshaft and rods , a small garange , could it manage that ?

    Thanks in advance
    Vadim.

    Vadim,

    1) compression test doesn't look that bad at all to me. Only cylinder #3 seems a little low compared to average of others, but might be within tolerances.
    With that kind of compression, loads of white smoke from the exhaust sound to me one or more valve seals have given up.

    2) dunno if a battery low on charge will cause engine to stall, but at least I would say it shoud be as low as not being able to start the engine up....
    AFAIK there are several other things that might cause that, one of being a dodgy lambda.

    3) don't know if this answers your question but in my opinion, since your engine seems needing a good refreshing, you might be in the need of doing just all the work for renewing it, checking and eventually changing all the bits:

    - head overall status;
    - valve guides;
    - valve seats + 3 angle vavle job;
    - valves;
    - cams and followers;
    - head cleaning, deburring, porting+polishing, matching ducts to gaskets and manifolds;
    - crankshaft;
    - crank main bearings;
    - rod bearings;
    - pistons and rings;
    - eventual flywheel lightening;
    - crankshaft assembly balancing;
    - clutch disk;

    Then you will of course need to buy full gasket sets, bearings, cambelt kit and eventually pistons and rings.

    All this + machineshop charges might cost a little fortune.....
    Expecially if you are planning to run that engine in a mid to high performance setup I personally would prefer to wait until having collected enaugh money to do all the jobs properly, instead of doing just some of the things, for the rush of having the car running again.

    4) A relatively simple way I can think of to restore the spring to a setting more or less similar to OEM (given spring actually mounted is OEM), is to disconnect your WGFV and unscrew the preload bolt until you have ~0.5-0.6 bar boost, which should more or less be the standard value;

    5) IIRC Paul N. posted a list of torque settings a while back, but don't remember where.....

    6) About crankshaft balancing, with the right machinery (not necessarely an "ultra-modern" digital balancing machine) and knowhow, even a small machineshop can do it. Only problem is to figure out if they know how to do it properly.....

      The crankshft is balanced "externally". This is a very different method to most other vehicles. In the UK there are only a few companies that can do this.

      Your compression are a little uneven, but within spec. Like Marco said, no.3 is low, but that is most likely to be a valve seating problem, suspect exhaust valves.

      The smoke could be anything, but most common thing is valve stem oil seals. These go hard with age.

        Do some research on this, but i've heard that some automatic transmission fluid will soften them up a little. -again, i hold no responsibility if your car gets totally fooked if you try this- do some research =)

          Thanks

          I still haven't got a fax with parts costs for repair. The dark side is calling "sell this damn car and all the alcon brakes rs2 turbos and other nice stuff you have in garage and buy a family mobile". No no I must resist.

          Why this things ever brakes. :E

          P.S. Marco you list is almoust exactly what i got from mechanics for "still waiting for prices for you rebuilt" list :E

          P.S.S. Yes I have a dead lambda , ano the smoke is black(oil) not white and i have a fuel smell(probably due to dead lambda).

            Er what !!!!! If the head has to come off to cure the valve problem i think spending less than £10 on a NEW set of VSOS is a better option. Dont think i would even bother with pouring ATF on them, even if the head didnt have to come off.

            Just my 2 cents. Maybe im wrong on that one.

                    So my one is very low then
                    1- 10.3
                    2-10.2
                    3-10.3
                    4-9.0
                    5-9.7

                    Shoud compression be mesured with throtle fully open or closed, my one was mesured with throtle closed, does this mater?

                      yes it does matter, the throttle must be WOT and engine at operating temperature before doing the tests. You are allowed some difference between cyls, cant remember the figures now as its all at work.
