The only place a bit of sealant should/could help is at the back, at the half moon(s) where the rifle drilling of the cam caps pierced the head. High Temp RTV is what some people use to make sure the half moon(s) stay in place.

It's some kind of silver paper. To be fair to the previous owner he did tell me he'd done this but at the time I didn't quite understand what he meant.

The car has a full Audi service history so at least it's had regular oil changes which is the main reason why I bought it.

Looking forward to fitting new gaskets this week and getting it running again.

Exactly what I thought. I've been here before with UR Quattro ownership. That's why I always say with an old car it's more about the most recent service history and current condition rather than for example the £10K it had spent on it all those years ago.

You need item 17 in the diagram below. This includes the cam cover edge gasket, two half moons for the firewall end of the cam cover and the integral 5 spark plug well sealing gasket. Incidentally, last week I saw a running UrS4 that had so much oil in the spark plug wells (all 5) that the coil to plug boots were totally saturated. Car still ran (go figure). Nevertheless, you should buy and install the gasket set (pretty easy, 30 min job, watch out for the No. 19 (10 mm) bolts that also hold the cover down to the head. 15 Nm torque on everything (IIRC))

Thanks again Andy. I was beginning to panick a bit for a moment as originally I bought the car for the engine to put in my SWB car................but now I'm sort of thinking of putting it back on the road as it's too good to scrap.

started a topic Oil Around Plugs

    Oil Around Plugs

    Hi,

Just bought an S2 and trying to get to grips wiyth it today while the Mrs is out.

Bsically there is an oil leak around the back of the engine and from what I can see someone has been using a gasket sealent which may mean the rocker gasket is U/S.

So whilst starting to remove various components I noticed that there is oil in the bores where the pulgs are. Will this also be leaking through from the rocker cover gasket?
Working...
