I would have to guess the coil pack or one of the position output sensors is going.

Try to clean the resistive tubes (i dont know the english word) that comes from the coilpack to the spark plugs.

you may have a serious crack in the tubes or manifoil....it will missfire if you have so.

Out of interest, where is the air temp sender? Got a piccie?

In a similar vein, does the S2 have a knock sensor?

Yeah, try that ones. Not the cheapest replacement, but might be the ptoblem.

Temp sender is on the intake manifold near the throttle body.

                    2 knock sensors.

Yep held on by 2 allen bolts, wash it in alcohol, check the resistance, clean the connections. A bad one of these, or disconnected will give a misfire above 3000rpm.

What would be the symptoms of a dodgy knock sensor (or two)?

Would it put the ECU into "safe mode" a la "Overboost"?

Does this generate a fault code?

                          Cheers.

My experience is that faulty knock sensors do not generate fault codes - nor do they trigger safe mode. The only fault recognised by OBD is o/c or s/c. I have NEVER seen knock sensor fault codes - except when I disconnected one connector to see if the OBD detected the o/c condition.

A dodgy knock sensor will result in the engine pinking if it does not signal this condition to the ECU in order for it to dynamically adjust timing to a level where knock is removed.

                              Hi Paul (& other gurus),

Well I've just pulled the fault code(s) on my ABY S2 and I've got a 2142 fault code on my MIL circuit.

I make that (thanks to your brilliant site) a "Knock Sensor #1, G61" fault".

I recall the CAT light coming on during a recent drive and sure enough the result is the car was stuck in safe mode where the boost is limited to about 7psi until I flipped the ignition on and off again.

As per my PM to you, I believe the fault to be more subtle now than a major boost leak as the car will boost to 17/18psi on overboost and 13psi normally and hold this boost. The readings are steady and don't fluctuate so the leak must be either very small or something else is at fault.

It may be my imagination but I was suspecting a temp related issue because the sporadic entry into safe mode would seem to occur having sat in traffic with high ambient temps and then calling for WOT or having been cruising on the M-way and then going quickly to WOT in 5th or 6th.

Next and most crucial questions are:

                              1) What/Where is the J220 connector?

                              2) Where are the knock sensors located on the ABY cos I wanna whip them out and replace with new?

                              Cheers guys.
