    Hydraulic Tappet Replacement

    Hi,

Is there a documented procedure for replacing the hydraulic tappets?

I don't know of a written procedure but having done this twice recently, I can asure you it's fairley straight forward.

I'm guessing from your other post about noisey distributor that you have a tappety rattle on the top end? I had the same thing on my stroker engine and it turned out to be duff tappets, brand new ones too. I changed the distributor first and then fitted another set of tappets, only for it to be the same. I got some guidance on what it good and bad for a tappet and ended up hand picking a set from the 3 sets I had. It's now as quiet as a mouse.

It's a friend of mines 3B engined Dialynx car. But you're right, he's complaining of a noisey rattle on the top end. He contacted me to see how easy a job it is, however I've never changed them. Is it as simple as taking the old ones out and just putting in the new ones without any set-up?

Pretty much yes. Make sure you know where all the timing marks are so you can time the cams up when they go back in, and make sure you know the orientation of the cam caps, they only go on one way.
It would be worth doing the cam belt and associated parts at the same time.

I normally use the cam gears as per the picture, camshaft pulley against the rocker cover, crank pulley against the oil pump and the TDC mark on the flywheel.

          Are there any more?

Also, do you have the tightening torque settings for the respective work.

I've already talked him into doing the timing belt and other associated parts even though they were only done a few years ago.

Before you put the new tappets in bleed them ,this is easy you just sit them in some oil and press the inside were the valve goes , this will remove the air from them .
If you don't do this they will slap like mad until they fill with oil.
Your not going to come to any harm if you don't do it but having done a few sets I would say it is well worth wile even if it is just so your neighbour doesn't think your car is fooked as a result of you working on it for hours .

The only other thing is to follow proper procedure for removing and replacing the cams with regard to the torque process .

Before you go and buy new tappets what oil are you using ?
I used some cheep synthetic once and after a thrashing the tappets would rattle there heads off .
I changed back to millers and no amount of thrashing will give me any tappet noise .

PM me your email address and I'll send you the 3B engine workshop manual, it has all the torque settings you will need.

Any hint on this guidance to recognize the goods from the bads?

No. Should I and if so, how to check?

I haven't seen him for a while, but when I listened to it, I would say it was the dizzy gear that was causing all the noise.

Have you seen that how-to on overhauling the tappets? You can take them to bits and clean them.

It's kind of hard to put into words! JP showed me and I just checked all mine against one he said was good. It's all about the amount of 'squishyness' ( thats an engineering term! ) they have. Quite a few of the brand new ones I had fitted already had failed springs in them after only 250miles
