    Turbo Timer Installation

I'd really be interested to hear from anyone using a turbo timer on an S2. I've been given a brand new boxed greddy full auto timer and am keen to give it a go. I know the general concensus is that they aren't necessary and/or are not a good idea for security/insurance reasons but I'm kind of curious. What I'm really after is to know if it would actually be possible to fit one and if so how I'd go about it. I've been told that a turbo timer won't work on older audis due to a lack of an accessory wire on the ignition switch. If anyone has a timer installed I'd be really grateful for any advice about how to go about wiring it up. As I say, I know most people would probably advise not to fit it, I just want to know if it's physically possible to get one working and if anyone's actually using one successfully.

    Thanks a lot in advance.

    After run pump system information

Sell it. No need. The AAN, ABY and ADU all have a system that automatically turns on a recirculating pump to run coolant through the turbo if the engine is too hot at shut down. Read more here:

So does 3B motor. In fact don't all Audi turbo engines from mid 80s onwards have the afterrun system?

I wasn't sure about the 3B. I just check with my friend Kate and she says that the 034965561C "additional" (auxilliary/after-run) water pump goes back as far as the 1984 Audi 200 (turbo) and all the way through the 80, 100, S2, S4, S6 and RS2 turbos AND supposedly the RR quattro (1991) and the 1980 quattro.

        To be confirmed.

It's deffo on the RR and I can only assume most if not all 10V turbo machines from the earlier era.

The 10v WR quattros do not have a water cooled bearing, not sure about the MB, these are both K26. The RR does though I think as its basically a 3B.

I think the after-run pump cools the head also. So even if you have a aircooled turbo it's worthwhile using the pump.

Thanks for the info. Would still like to hear if anyone has any experience of using a turbo timer on an S2/RS2. I've been told that it's physically impossible to fit one and make it work due to the unique wiring of the Audi ignition system. My main reason (apart from it being a freebie!) for the turbo timer project is basically to disprove the theory that it can't be done. Having looked at the installation manual though I'm beginning to have my doubts due to the lack of an accessory power source. Neither of the example ignition switch setups in the manual look the the one on my car.

I realize the benefits of using a turbo timer are debatable it's now more about the challenge than anything else. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I have no idea...correct me if im wrong..

But I thought that the whole point of a turbo timer was so that the engine can supply the turbo bearings with oil whilst it is still spinning? Not to supply coolant, but to prolong the turbo bearing life by supplying oil. And i thought it was only useful for those people that drive their cars hard, (i.e car would have experienced full boost not long before the car is parked up, therefore still spinning at however many 10,000's RPM?)
Just a thought, someone told me that once, and it seemed to make sense to me?

Surely the bearing is lubricated by oil and cooled by water ?

That FUD about pumping oil to cool the bearing is the work of a turbo timer salesman.

The FUD about the Audi being difficult to wire up a turbo timer is the work of a man who can't be arsed to find a solution (not that you need one).

I think the bearing is cooled and lubricated by oil. But also cooled additionally by water.

The point is that if the turbo is too warm when the oil that stays on the bearings during shut down is burned up and leaves carbon deposits. Next time the engine is turned on these deposits make a turn and Lea e the bearing while making a tiny mark. This repeated several times in months/years reduces the life of the turbo.

Thats what i meant... i meant that yes the turbo is cooled by the water, but surely it needs to be lubricated by a supply of oil whilst spinning hence the need for the engine to be running??? I dont know, just thinking out loud...
